I installed a Pent lll slot one cpu on an Asus p3v4x M/B and notice that the retention mechanism hardly even touches the Processor let alone lock it. Everything works fine so it's installed correctly and there is only one way to install the URM's I have the same setup on another system and it's the same way. The question is do I need specific parts? Asus says the board is for Coppermine slot 1 secc2 processors which this is (P lll 800EB) Couldn't find specific info at Intel.
Also, the system reports the processor as a P ll. I assume I need a cpuid patch. Where would I get this? Doesn't seem to be on the M/B drivers CD.
Thanks, John DeSantis

This sounds to me more like a bios update to cure the recognition problem. As far as the retention aspect goes....If it works, who cares...just make sure you dont play basketball with the cpu box and it should stay in there ok !

Yes, it won't fall out as long as i don't bang it around. But the question still needs answered. What is wrong with these URM's.
As far as the P lll recognition.. I don't think a BIOS update is the answer as my other system ( this one ) reports properly with an earlier BIOS REV and date.

Not being familiar with ASUS mobo's...are the jumpers on the mobo set for the PIII? Or do you have soft-bios management and settings there?
As I am considering upgrading to a PIII from a PII Celeron I've noticed that according to my mobo manual I need to change the jumpers for the diff cpu, but when I look on the mobo itself the jumpers are already set for a PIII whilst running the Celery. If this isn't a misprint maybe it means the soft-bios (on this Amptron mobo) takes priority over the board jumpers. I guess I'll find out when I put in the PIII slot one

This board can be set to jumper free and it's the default setting. I run a P lll 800 EB and it booted up with everthing set. Still need to find out about the Retention Mechanisms. Intel no help so far.
