Have a tried serveral modems in differing slots and same problem occurs regardless. Under control panel/modems I try diagnostic on the modem and get an 'OpenComm' msg 'Couldn't Open Port' or trying Dial-up Networking and get 'Dial-up networking modem is being used by another DUN connection or another program. Disconnect other conn/prog and try again'. Have reloaded drivers, closed all other programs, deleted all DUN config, started again with New Connection all to no avail. Tried Dr Modem which didn't detect. Changed SETUP and BIOS to default settings and still no joy. Any clues anyone??

Boot into safe mode and see if there is more than one modem, remove all the extras modems you find there, reboot, then check and see if you have any software that (like fax software) also uses a connection, and then possibly you'll need to remove and reinstall DUN. Post back with what you find....

Hi MJC

Thanks for your posting - I'd tried all that still to no avail. I suspect there is something wrong in the motherboard or something, the same errors are repeatable regardless of modem card, connection or anything...

Have you tried the modem in a different slot?

"Could Not Open Port" Error Message
When you try to use your modem, you may receive the following error message:
Could not open port
This error message is typically the result of a resource conflict or a program that is loading from the StartUp folder that opens a COM port. Use the troubleshooting steps in the "Resource Conflicts" section in this article to resolve this issue. To temporarily disable programs in the StartUp folder:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.

On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

Click the Startup tab. For programs that may control your modem, click to clear the check box for the program. If you are unsure whether or not a specific program should be disabled, click to clear all of the check boxes except the following check boxes:

ScanRegistry
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
TaskMonitor

Use the 3 finger salute ONCE and see if RNAAPP is running beofre you try to use the modem, if so highlight it and click End Task at bottom. Then try it.

Try this.......Go into your Bios Setup (usually the Delete key @ startup)...go to "Peripherals" tab and make Com 2 (or "B" on some Bios') Inactive.......on some mobo's that will allow the modem to install correctly.......especially if it is a PCI modem as I suspect. It wants to go to Com 3 and use the same resource[address] as Com 2 would normally take and that is very likely the source of the problem.

I had a problem similar to this.
Do you have Antivirus software installed? ANY anti-virus software

My prob was as follows.
Anti-Virus software installed and enabled, no matter what configuation I set up. various probs with comp. No probs when AV installed and disabled. If I enabled AV software after booting up and then tried to connect to web I recieved that message. If I connected first and then enabled Anti-virus I was diconnected after a few seconds. After months of trying to figure it out I decided to remove cards one at a time. Since I took out my internal modem the problem has dissapeared. I am now using external modem and Anti-virus software. Though this gives a slower connection. But it is a lot safer
So try un-installing AV software and see what happens.
Worth a try http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
