Hello,

I recently installed a wireless adapter to my 100 mhz Pentium PC
for a 2Wire gateway. It seems to work fine. The error I am getting may be unrelated. But, now, I am getting a 'system board resource conflict' error. Pressing F1 to go to setup shows 'no mouse installed'. Com1 is enabled, com2 is disabled. ESC to reboot and the machine detects new hardware. It installs drivers for a PS/2 mouse and a new port(COM 2).
In device manager, the PS/2 mouse is listed with a yellow caution sign.
Selected to disable the hardware. The serial mouse listed has no resource tab. COM 1 and COM 2 are listed in device manager. COM 2 shows setting of 9600 bits per second. Selected to disable. Cannot find any resource conflicts in device manager. Tried reinstalling and installed a new serial mouse. Am able to use the serial mouse. But, at reboot, still get 'stystem board resource error'. What should I check for? And where? And how do I get there? Please be gentle, I don't know what I am doing. I look at most of the posts here and just say 'huh?' Would really appreciate your advice and help. Thank-you!

First enable COM 2 in your BIOS (or setup). Also while in setup check that both "serial" ports don't use the same COM port and address. (IE: COM1/3F8) where the "3F8" is the address. If they do simple resign the port/address combo.

Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Dear Ghost_Hacker,

Thank-you for responding.

I tried what you suggested. COM2 sets up at 2f8h, COM1 at 3f8h, and
boot is still coming up with system board resource conflict.
Now, I am afraid to shut down or restart from Windows,
cuz it gets hung up on the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen.
http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif I have copied down all the info from every screen
I have found in BIOS setup just in case.

Do you think it may have anything to do with a wireless adapter
I recently installed? Everything was fine for about a week.
Then, this mysterious boot error started to happen. I have
run an anti-virus program and everything checks out with it.
Could it be something as simple as a battery replacement or
is my hard drive just gonna take a dive? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Well, I just want to thank you again for responding. So, thanks! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Your hard drive wouldn't cause this error so I wouldn't worry about that and don't worry about your BIOS either. The only way you could loss the BIOS information is if the battery dies , you flash a new bios, or load the defaults. ( Having a written copy of your BIOS info can come in handy if one of the above should happen)

I always suspect new hardware or software whenever I get a new error. So I would check the resources that Windows is assigning it or simply install it in another PCI/ISA slot and see if the error goes away.

If that doesn't work then reset the BIOS defaults and reboot. (since you have written down the BIOS settings your OK) If the error goes away then try rebooting a few more times, if the error comes back it's the battery.

Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
