We are setting up a network between two home computers (1 x win 98/soho network card, 1 x win2000pro/Compaq network card). They are less than 10m apart and we are using a Cat5 cross-over cable with RJ45 pins. The win98 computer recognises itself in its Network Neighbourhood, but the win2000 doesn't and reports that the Network Cable is unplugged even though we have checked it many times. Could it be a cable problem or is something wrong with the network card? Thank you!

Are you absolutely sure the cable is a crossover cable?

Try another cable, if that doesn't work then it is probably the NIC.
