I can`t install my zipdrive or printer on the paralell port. I have checked all connections including internal. Is there a way to check the port or detect a physical breakdown( can it be replaced )?
Thank`s, Tom.

Well you've been here on site long enough to know you do not post the sam thing twice in two different forums. It's not going to get your problem solved faster just makes it hard to keep track of the problem?

I realised I posted in the wrong forum to start with so posted here in what I hope is the correct one. I will now delete from troubleshooting system.
Take care and Thank`s for your help and advice,Tom.

Some parallel port modes may not allow the Zip drive and the computer to communicate properly. On most computers, the parallel port mode can be changed in the computer Setup.

do you know if you have anything else useing the port or if you have any conflicts.have you got the latest firmware from Iomega if thats the zip your using.

1.Locate the parallel port mode setting.

2.If the parallel port mode is set to ECP or unidirectional, change the setting to a different mode.

3.Exit the computer setup making sure you save the changes.

4.Restart your computer.

Now, check to see if there is a drive letter for your Zip drive.

Thank`s Yoda, I looked in setup and the p,port says normal, should I change this? I also reinstalled it, and although it appears in Device manager the problem persists. Both the zip drive and printer have worked fine on this p.c. Untill!! I tried to install a cd-rw wich took over my zips drive letter(F), I re-allocated the cd-rw to G but F had then disapeared. Also on installing the cd-rw I had to remove the internal p,port connection to get at the audio connection, I think I reconnected o.k. red line to 1. Could I have been a bit heavy handed and damaged something? the pins(25) all seem fine.
Tom.

Check that when you put the connector back on the header you are not off a copuple of pins on one end or that the cable isn't beig stretched a little too far and not keeping good contact. Also you can try cycling through the modes availabe in BIOS and see if Windows then detects it after a mode change.....

Have you removed it from Device Manager and let Windows reinstall it?

Have you checked Device Manager in Safe mode to see of there are any "ghost drivers" or devices?

I re-checked the conection, and I think I may have been missing the single pin on top,I`m not sure. The printer now works in safe mode, problem is I can`t get out of safe mode. I tried restarting holding the ctrl key down, but I couldn`t change the settings in the menu wich was set on normal, and I also noticed that the k/board won`t function in ms dos. The fact that the printer now works in safe mode is encouraging though.

I don't know...One step forward and two steps back!

K/board working in Windows and not in MSDOS?

Hmmm, doesn't sound good! Now that I said something negative...need something positive....Ummm, Way to hang in there! You will figure this out and fix! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Try seeing if the keyboard works with a boot disk.

Does it work before DOS loads? Can you get into the BIOS setup?

Eureka!!!!!!!Everything is back thank heavens, and you Folks. Well almost,
the keyboard is still playing up, Should I re-install it? The win 98 startup disc didn`t do anything, the floppy drive light never came on and the system started normally(I inserted disk before I switched on?).
I can get into setup if that`s any use.The k/board is a Logitec cordless.
The problem with the paralell port seems to have been the internal connection, I am pretty sure I was missing the solo pin wich I didn`t think could happen! I am made up it`s sorted, Thank`s again for all your help, Tom.

If it is a cordless yeah I would reinstall it, and to make sure the floppy would work you may need to change the boot order, in setup, to A firt.....

I re-installed the k/board, set the A drive to boot first and everything is back to normal. I took the cd-rw that caused the original problem back to the store and, I will now try and get one that does not conflict with it`s own software and perhaps idiot proof.
Thank`s mjc and everyone that helped me to resolve the nightmare, no doubt
"I`ll be back". Hope you all have a great Christmas, Tom.
