I'll catch this in the morning...but yeah sounds like a line problem...start keeping track of what the weather is like when it is really bad and also pay attention to anything that shows up when on a voice call....

Di,
Do you have Squirrels around running on your power and phone lines?
My Father has had a couple different incidents with the little buggers chewing into the phone lines exposing them enough that eventually it interferes with phone conversations. However, the sensitivity of the modems might be affected long before a voice call would pick up a degradation in line usage.
I do believe that the phone company is quite capable of checking out signal strength between point A and B...Sounds like the techs they've been sending out figure if you can order pizza and beer what more do you really need?! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

diurnal...you have my sympathy and support. "Been there, done that" on my puter. "Currently there, doing that" on hubby's. A few days ago, I posted a download speed question.. Here (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum16/HTML/000505.html)..and, if you look about three quarters down the thread, Paul Komski posted some links on line noise that you might want to check out. We haven't gotten to it yet, but definitely going to check into the troubleshooting on line noise right after disabling the ethernet adapter.
A quick simple check that is rather easy to perform...make sure the house is pretty quiet, pick up the phone and press a valid number in you are (1 works well in the US or the first digit of your phone number) and then listen...you should here absolute silence (or very close to it). If there is hiss, crackles or other sounds you have a noisy line, and it WILL interfere with voice calls. Also if the box on the outside of you house is more than 5 years old or so then it could be helping the problem along (some where in the 5-10 year ago period most phone companies changed the design of the box, the newer ones are more "data friendly" -- cleaner, more secure internal connections). Also one of the biggest rips that the phone company has is the "We don't guarantee data connections on a normal line....", they use that to justify poor service all around. Al so do you have any of the additonal featues, like caller ID, call waiting etc...if not you may want to consider grabbing one (callerID is usulally recommended for this), because in order for them to work properly the telco has to update a couple of components on your line (if you already have them and your internet connection is misbehavig this badly then I suspect there are errors on those "extras" too)--and that would be a very good reason for a service call! (Those extra services are nice for the telco...it actually costs them money to prevent those services from being activated, so when they have you paying for one they don't really want to see you quit...hehe). And last, but not least, use the shortest possible cable to run from the computer to the phone jack...(if a 6' will do, don't use a 25'...)

Have had those recently. Odd thing was the computer worked perfectly, but the phone played up, for instance one ring only then dead silence. Wires inside box (under eaves) were partly chewed to bits by the buggers.

Yes, the phone guy once told me that the "extras" like Caller ID were where they make their profit. Fussed that the government requires them to keep basic phone down in price for the poor ("down" being relative sometimes) and that the people paying for the extras were paying for those "affordable" basic phone lines. Have some skepticism about that because "basic" has gotten a bit pricey, but that's what he said.
Do remember someone saying years ago that their cordless phone too close to puter was preventing a good connection. So, assuming that's something similar to EMF, could check for that sort of thing also. Just occurred to me that we should connect a phone to the line coming out (through) the APC backup too, and do your test, mjc. Thanks.

Did the test pianork talk about, one thing is i could nt put my password in for the isp, when i connected to hyperterminal, dont know why.
But i got variable line noise and variable power levels, so i dont know still. I go the phone and checked to see if i could hear something , i could. One thing the jack is hanging out of the wall, and bare wires are every where. So got some of that black tape and cover it. Seems fine now(modem), but it stills have problems on the intial connection.
But it seems fine and tommorrow it want work, so i still in testing

I can sympathize with you I get a lot of disconnects especially if its raining a lot of our lines are underground so they get saturated. One interesting note when I had my second line installed(which I am no longer using since I am not working) the telephone company asked me if it was going to be for a computer because a differant type of block needed to be installed. they claimed it would work better than the standard block for data transmissions.Don't know if they were just blowing smoke or not. But if you block is out of the wall with bare wires that can sure make a differance. They can be purchased cheaply at wal-mart and easily installed I recommend this over black tape for a permanant fix. The ISP I use post any problems currently being experianced wheter it is thiers or phone companies, may be you should contact them and see if anyone elae in your area is complaining about the same problem.
