I searched all the questions for a while back and didnt see this one, probably too simple to ask, but here goes.
I have a linksys 4-port router hooked up to the DSL modem, and one computer hooked straight into the router, and two more hooked up through a hub. I am now just using two computers, so i was going to take the hub out, but when i did and plugged the cable directly into my NIC, it would not connect, and i can't even go to the router page, yet when i hooked it back up to the hub, it works fine.
Do i have to plug the cable into the router in a different slot, i had it in port 2, then plugged into the uplink port on the hub.
please help.

Hmmm...I seem to remember that if you are going NIC to NIC you need a different type of cable than the ones used with a router.
I think it's called a crossover cable rather than the straight cable used for the hubs.
One of the networking specialists should be by shortly...to verify...or, do a GOOGLE (http://www.google.com) using NIC TO NIC CABLE

Although I'm not certain of what you are wanting to do.......I'll try.....If all you want is connectivity to the DSL modem through the router, all you do is plug one end into the NIC card on computer the other end to the router[for ea. machine] and probably run a program called "winipcfg" by typing it into the "RUN" box above START......it will start a program that lets you "Release All" and then "Renew All" - in that order. If it works, you should be back in business. Good Luck!

It should be very straight forward so something must be a bit screwy. You can't access the router through your browser? Have you tried resetting the router? Shut everything down - modem, router, comps, reset the router and fire back up and see if you can access the router

As far as resetting the router if you press in on the button briefly it'll reset it, if you hold it for a while you'll set it back to factory defaults

Resetting the router did it, i guess the router was used to having a hub there, and after removing it was just as confused as i was. Thanks ya'll for the help.
