View Full Version : Laser Performance = Par or Bogie?

Have two Lexmark 4039 laser printers as stand-alone printers.
These are 5-6yrs old and were purchased used.
Parallel cable interface.
Once these babies start spitting out pages, they really fly.
Factory specs advise 10 ppm, we get more like 12-15ppm @600dpi
So all is well regarding end result.

My first question relates to wait time for first page.
Text only page takes 20-30 seconds.
Page with graphics takes 1-minute minimum.
Is this normal?
I only have experience with inkjets to compare, and it seems that with same on-page content and interface, inkjet is faster than this by a factor of 5-10.

Questions regarding printer memory:
Each machine has 2mb non-removable as factory standard.
I added 8mb non-parity simm (per specs) to only existing slot.
Added memory is recognized for total of 10 mb.
Wait time per first question remains unchanged.
Is the added memory only used to store MORE info (pages)?

Only curiosity prompts question, as time lag is not that big of a deal.

The installed simms were from old PC, not ordered new. Since they were recognized, I figured new life for old junk. Am now wondering if mere recognition does not necessarily signify functionality.
What I’m asking is, as I see no apparent change, are they working?

Curious re 1 more aspect of this memory. Is memory buss architecture different, thus allowing single simm to be installed?

You may be waiting for the data to transfer via the slow parallel connection...this would explain a longer delay when printing graphics.

Hi Fixrupr,
I think what you are seeing for graphics wait time is correct. I also think that the memory is working correctly. With a single Simm, this would indicate an 8bit bus, therefore, a single stick works.

One suggestion would be to lower the ressolution of your prints. Unless you are trying to get photo studio quality pictures (not from an older Laser), 600 DPI is very high.

Try some samples with this in mind, 72dpi is fine for plain text, 150 is fine for simple graphics, 300 is great for more detailed graphics. Also saves on ink and toner.
Good luck

Thanks for the feedback,

FYI, 600dpi is often required here, as we make blackline masters to handout at math teacher seminars. The actual % of black is low as these are line images of triangles, parallelograms etc. File size is large though, as they often are Adobe Acrobat, full page.

I added a 16MB SIMM to my NEC SuperScript 870 (2MB built-in). This additional memory is then enabled as an option in Printer Properties. (Unfortunately, NEC never wrote Win2k drivers that work correctly with it.)

The additional memory would only be real useful in a network situation, anyway.

I believe the time delay is because the processor in the printer needs to compose the entire page before printing (as well as the parallel data transfer rate).

You folks are better than having the manual, and I do not forget which drawer you’re kept in! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

You mean you keep us in a drawer??? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif hehe...

I think it's been pretty much covered, kenja pegged the wait time issue, the printer has to process the page before it can print it. More memory mainly lets it handle more data at one time, rather than actually speeding it up.

Just to give you something of a comparison, your wait times are about the same as with my HP Laser Jet Series II and Panasonic laser printers. Text usually takes up to about 30 seconds depending on filesize, graphics twice as long, sometimes more.
