New out of box compaq running windows XP cannot get connected to ISP modem dials out then just stops I can hear the recording about hanging up and redialing the number coming from the modem speaker. Have reconfigured the modem settings with ISP personnel. According to them everything should be a go. I checked the settings in device manager it reported that the modem is using IRQ 18 ????? is this possible.

Thanks

Hello triplej,

My first take would be to contact Compaq and have them walk you through to a solution. Did it come equipped with a PCTel Modem?

What happens in CONTROL PANEL>MODEMS>DIAGNOSTICS>MORE INFO?

Thanks for response Whyzman it's hard to get answers from compaq support and I live 70 miles or so from the computer store. And yes the modem was already installed. I checked more info from the control panel and got the modem settings ets everything looks ok there. may have to break over and check with compaq. dang it.

thanks

One of the things you paid for when you bought that Compaq was warranty support...use it and don't rest until THEY make it right...and don't accecpt that this is a software/OS issue...if it is then they should have known about it and provided a driver/modem that is capable of being used with XP

If you don't mind at this point giving it a shot...you might want to attempt a fresh start. Head into SAFE MODE>DEVICE MANAGER>MODEM...see what you've got there and REMOVE. Reboot...if PCTel supplied a driver for the modem select HAVE DISK and reload the drivers.

Beforehand I would copy down any changes that your ISP had you make so that you'll be able to re-enter should the need arise.

And then again, as mjc so eloquently stated...Have Compaq make it right...you paid for the warranty!

Hi

Since you have a Compaq, try using the compaq Restore Options (at the top of your start menu- click on "Compaq">> There a window will open to allow you to choose to reinstall your modem drivers from the image of your original configuration.

or-

as stated above- uninstall it and let XP find and re-install.

I have the same modem from compaq and it installed the PCTel drivers, no problems. Note, I just added XP Pro to this pc,(dual boot win98se) and it found/installed.

(I use this for faxing purposes)

one other thing- in your connection properties, make sure "Wait for dial tone" is NOT checked.
