A couple of days ago my mouse stopped working. I didn't install anything or delete anything, it just stopped. It does work after I start the computer, but as soon as everything is loaded it freezes again. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, but still nothing. I don't think it's the mouse, because I've tried another mouse (not a new one, but it should still work) and the same thing happened. Is there anything else you guys can suggest?

My computer is 200 MHZ, 32 mb RAM, serial mouse from Radio Shack, Windows ME...

If you can help me out at all it would be greatly appreciated. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

For some reason ME seems to do this more often then 98....boot up into safe mode (<f8> while booting and select safe mode from the menu that appears) and then go to device manager and see if the are several mice listed, also see if there is more than one serial port....remove the extra mice (if the is mmre than one serial port make sure they really are the same one before removing any)....

Thanks for the reply.

There are no extra mice listed... and the mouse works in safe mode.

hello Ashley,
I gotta ask you, how long have you been running ME on this machine. I am amazed you don't have all kinds of problems with it.
Did you remove the mouse in "SafeMode" and restart and let it find it again? If not, I recommend doing that. Also, be sure to do a full shutdown and let the machine set for a few minutes before starting back up.
The drivers for that mouse are generic and you should not have to use a disk to install it. Only if it has some special features or additional graphics package you want to use.

I've had Windows ME on my machine since October. Would it be better to just put Windows 98 SE back on? Someone told me that it would be.

I tried what you said, and when I came back after being on safe mode and it found the mouse, it worked for about 5 seconds then froze again.

I forgot to mention this in my last post, but now the device manager now longer has the yellow warning sign (or whatever it is) over the mouse. It says it's working fine... but it's not.

Remove it from Safe Mode and let Windows find and install it again, this sounds like corrupt drivers and that might fix it. (Yes, even if only one is listed. The idea is to remove it completely, drivers included, and force Windows to reinstall it.)

Hi, thanks for all your help everyone, but I went out and bought a USB mouse and it's working perfect. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
