Hi,

Yesterday my netgear network card stopped working properly. I tried to ping the loopback address which was fine but when i tried to ping its ip address 192.168.0.1 it gives req timed out messages. I also get the same messages when trying to ping from another machine on the network. I swapped the network card for another one but got the same problem. I guess there is something wrong with the motherboard. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Thanks

Buffalito

When you hook the ethernet cable to the ethernet, does the light on the card light up. Also does the light on the hub light up?

It doesn't lool like that is a valid IP address or it is down...I just tried pinging it myself and got the good ole timeout. Try a few other IP's just to test.

Ping testing (http://www.ctstelecom.com/ping_outsideworld.htm) this site offers some test IPs and some info on using the ping command.

In Win 98 click Run then type command hit enter and at the prompt type ping -t 64.58.76.222. This will continually ping the IP until you tell it to stop by holding down Ctrl and hitting C...alternatively you can hold down Ctrl and hit the Pause/Break key for a summary of current ping histroy while it continues.

There is a light that is on at the back of the network card but it doesn't flash anymore. I tried it with another network card and that's the same. btw the ip address is internal so you won't be ale to ping it from where you are! I guess it must be the computer or am i wrong? Any thoughts?

I had the exact same problem and finally found out that my Win98 SE TCP/IP and the other networking software was corrupted. I had to finally reload WIN98 in another directory to be able to get the NIC to work with my cable modem through a router. Another computer on the same router was working perfectly .....so I naturally thought it was the NIC card itself...it wasn't in my case.
