I'm having a strange problem with my home network. It worked fine for a long time. And all the sudden on my First pc I can't download files off the web or move files over the LAN. I can get small files like .jpg or small .txt files. But when it comes to moving a large amounts of data over it just stops.

I can do all the standard ping troubleshooting and it shows no problems there. And my 2nd pc shows no problems downloading or uploading off the web.

I had win98se running on my first pc and figured if I nuke the system and put winXP on it that this might solve the problem. But it's the same problem all over agin. So I figured it's hardware. So I stuck another NIC in it and still no good. So I byepasted the LLinksys 4 port router and went straight into the cable modem and still no good.

I hope someone can help and TIA.

Some things to try (don't use the router for these test. Instead connect the computer directly to the modem.):

Reboot your cable modem

Open Control panel and select the "network conections" icon. Then right click and choose "properties" for the "local area connection". At the top of the new page that opens your nic should be listed. Click the "configure" botton and then the "advance" tab. Scroll down to "media type" and choose "10mbps half-dublex" from the drop down. Save and close the window.

Switch nics and IP addresses with the 2nd computer. What happens?

I have dun 1/2 of your test so far and it's working beter. I removed the router and swiched over to 10mbps half dublex. if I can send this mesage it will confirm that my first pc will send a receve better then what it did befor. I downloaded a few files and thay came down fine. I will continy on with the test if you like but I don't see the point. I just need to get it working on my LAN now. I don't know if I like the limited half duplex and 10mbps thow.

You don't need to switch the nic or the IP addresses if the "half-dublex" test is working. What I would do is go out to the the Linksys site and download the drivers for that card. The download may have a setup program that you can run in DOS. Use that to configure the card instead of using Windows. (I always use the DOS setup program to configure a NIC if needed.)

As for the speed you aren't lossing anything. Your cable connection proably isn't running 10mbps full duplex anyway. (As for 100mbps full or half dublex you can forget it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif )
