I just installed a used but functional cd burner in a 98se machine. 1st ide controller has hd as master and cd-rom as slave. Secondary ide has burner as master... It won't work.??? It is an Aopen crw6924. Device manager detects and shows 2 cd-rom devices with no drivers installed or required. inserted a disk and there does not seem to be any reaction, no spin, no detect. I am starting to think device is pouched. Any thoughts??? Thanks for any input.
Power cable firmly connected?
Lights lighting up?
Before you throw in the towel on it you may want to try it in another machine....no reaction, no spin...nothing most likely it is dead...

Hey I work in a computer repair shop, and when I install drives I sometimes plug the ribbon cable in backwards and the drive does not work. If you just installed the drive, you should check if the cable is in the right way. Remember, the red stripe goes towards the power.

Does "used but functional" mean you have seen it work or does it mean someone TOLD you it worked??? If you have seen it work.....it's probably a power or cabling problem.....otherwise, "pouched" might be an understatement.

Yes tried to disconnect, delete any reference, as soon as I reconnect device manage states I have two cd-rom devices with the correct model numbers so I am assumming the ribbon cable is functioning. It is getting power because the light comes on and the tray works. Will try on tuesday to see if it will work in my 2000 machine.

Sounds like it is doing everything but "reading"/"writing"...the operating system you use it on shouldn't make a difference UNLESS you have a DMA problem ......try this before pulling it out of the puter it is currently in. Go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager/CD Rom and doubleclick on the unit in question.....go to "settings" - if DMA is checked, then uncheck it and visa versa.....see if that makes a difference....if not, then you might try it on another machine.
