View Full Version : Communication with printer lost after first page

Hello.

I have misbehaved HP DeskJet 695C printer on Windows 2000 Pro
system: after powering it up, it prints the first page properly,
but when it reaches a second page, printer usually pauses, makes
a loud noise, and spits out an empty page. That is in the best case.
Other times, it prints (on the second page) characters from extended
ASCII set, or just simply smears ink all over the page.

Now, the first page prints properly *only* after printer's
powering up (it seems that it is not important how much time
passed since powering up). When you try to print a page as a
second job (that is, you printed one page, paused, and now try
to print again), it doesn't succeed.

Sometimes, it is possible to print more then one page in a
first batch after powering up (that is, when pages printed
as a single job, without interruption), and even with
insignificant interruptions (for example, if you print a
first batch and printer runs out of paper (and stops, as
a result), there is a chance that if you will add more
paper and press "continue" button on the printer, you still
will be able to print some more pages).

Generally, when i need to print more then one page, i
use a following routine: power up printer, print a page,
power it down, power it up up (even one second of "downtime"
is enough), print the second page, power down etc., etc..

It is not a driver problem, because first of all W2k includes
suitable driver for that printer (so it is said on HP's site),
and secondly - i tried to connect a printer to an old PC
running Win98 with HP's driver installed, and got the same
result.

Now, i got one interesting message when trying to print
on Win98: after the first page, a message appeared saying
that communication with printer was lost.

Is there is some solution to that problem?

Daniel,
How do you have the printer hooked up to the computer?

Standard serial cable.

I also have Win2000 and had problems with my printer. I did everything I could, I even called tech support. Finally I found that my scanner was causing the problem. Because the scanner was plugged into my parallel port and was host for the printer. When I uninstalled the driver for the scanner the problem stopped.

I had some of the same problems you described. I found that deleting the printer software, and downloading it from hp s website. And it worked great after that. Also after that was done, i had other problems and i had to crash my computer and re install everything. I installed the original software that came with my printer and my printer problems were back again, so i had to install from the website again. So it actually worked twice..
Hope it helps

Unfortunately, it won't work in my case, because there is no
HP driver for W2k -- you have to use the one that comes with
Windows (so it is said on HP's support page), and there is only
one version for that driver (i also tried to remove printer
and then reinstall it, but that didn't help) . And except that,
as i also have an old PC running Win98 (for which there *is* an
official HP dirver), i tired to download and install it, but
it didn't solve the problem either.

First, why are you using the serial port?

Have you tried using the parallel port?

The reason you get the " can't communicate " error is that you have to have a IEEE 1284 cable, and use the parallel port , for bi-directional print devices to be recognized.

Try to change the data processor you're running ( ie, change from RAW to EMF ) and use the Parallel port. Even though serial ports can be used for printing, it's not recommended.
