I've hooked up my HP 840c printer by usb cable and everything seemed ok when printing any number of pages of text. However when attempting to print an A4 picture or photo the printer manages to get about halfway through the print and then i get a message that the computer cannot communicate with the printer. Whatever i do, nothing helps and i have to quit.
Any got any ideas ----- please?

Can this printer also be used on a parallel port?
If so try it and see if you have the same problem....that way you can narrow it down as to whether it is a USB or a printer problem.

Yes, the printer can be used on the parallel port and thats how i get round the problem for larger prints, but it causes a conflict with another device sharing the same IRQ, so whilst i can work around the problem, it's not an easy solution for family use. I do have a Agfa scanner on usb, with both comming off the same (2 usb port) add-on card. I know that there are various bios settings for the parallel port but thought that usb was supposed to solve these type of problems?
I should have pleanty of ram -512meg, pleanty of spare disk space - 28gig but can't think of what is causing the problem.
Hmmm....just graphics, I wonder if there is some conflict with the scanner...have you tried printing when the scanner is unplugged?
Is the scanner a self powered device or just runs off the USB port?
If not self-powered you may want to try a powered hub, and try disabling "USB error detection" in the properties for the USB card (in device manager), also try the latest drivers for both the scanner and printer.....

The scanner is self powered but i will try printing with the scanner unplugged and if no joy, try updating both printer and scanner drivers.
Thanks for the suggestions so far mjc, i'll post the results when i get chance to try - thats when i can drag my son off the internet games!

I am having similar prob with Xerox 760 printer. Great with text. But when printing Photos Help!
It seems to cause banding (?)Colour differences on printed page, stripes, Cannot think of better way of explaining. Printer replaced, new print head, new cartridges, USB and paralel port same errors. Xerox have tried everything they can think of.
