One more problem.

Hi guys, let's see if you can help me to solve this problem.
Until a week ago i had a PC ( PIII 550 MHZ, 128 Mram HD 20 G W95 B ) with a modem Us robotics SPORTSTER MESSAGE PLUS identified by the following label ( 21TQ2288S107 13206800 ) and everithing was working fine, with always a speed connection of 57600 bps.
After a personal mistake ( have you ever done this " DOS shell, then type c:\windows> delete *.* ; are you sure ( Y/N ) Y then ENTER ????? ) was not possible to reinstall W95 and then i upgraded the PC to W98 SE ).
Eveithing works fine except the internet connection, stable at a speed of 50666 bps.
I have then tested the same telephone line with the laptop ( integrated modem ) with a speed of 57600 bps.
I have reinstalled many times the software of the modem with the same result.
Max speed on settings is set at 115200 bps; anyway the settings are the same as W95 because i have copied on paper the old settings
I have downloaded the upgrade driver from 3com.com site but no improuvement.
I have downloaded then the software to upgrade the firmware of the modem to V90 standard ( actually seems to be X2 ) but i have not tested yet due to the fact i want to understand why before was working and now not.
Anybody has an idea how to fix the situation ???

Best regards

56kbps modems connect at 33.6Kbps and some telephone lines will not access higher than 33.6/ with all that in mind have you tried to ping your provider, and do a DNS test for time outs? don't know if any of this is going to help you, but gotta start some where.

No i haven't tried, but i cannot understand why with the previous W95b everithing was fine and now not ( BTW the modem is the same, with the same cable, ecc ecc ); and also why with the laptop ( K6 550 MHz, W98 SE 64 Mram, 5 G HD ) the connection is at 57600 bps.
I think the next step will be to installa the sportster external modem on the laptop, but i think i altready know the answer : everithing works fine !! ) .
I think the problem is in the computer, also i have noticed that the request for the connection is longher than before, about 2 minutes instead of about 50-60 seconds of before.
Help please.

Zoe, did you make any changes to your initialization instructions to your modem? I own two US robotics internal faxmodems and they regularly connect at 50.6 per Windows. One of them I just installed into a brand new Dell P4 (the modem that came with it really sucked, Conexant v90-kflex combo that does not work well in my geographical area) and I added some init instructions, and upon connection the computer said it was connecting at 110. Now, as I understand it (I find modems rather mysterious) that speed apparently is somewhat misleading, it reflects compression, and a dial-up connection will always be at best 53k. In fact, sometimes both modems connects at 53. Anyway, I dropped the init instructions save one and it's back down to a usual connection speed of 50.6, but with no apparent difference in overall speed when I'm surfing. For what it's worth. Good luck. Also, YODA74, what do you mean when you say 56k modems connect only at 33.6?

The modem is external.
Anyway i don't know how to change the inizialization parameters, it is appreciate a tutorial.
Tomorrow i will try to connect the external modem to the laptop; i will let you know.
Now it is time to switch off the batteries, being here 0:40 AM.

Thanks to everibody.

If you have a US Robotics modem, then what are you downloading from 3Com's website?
If you're asking about the difference between 57600 and 50666, I wouldn't worry about it. There's no way that you were really reaching 57600bps - it's not possible (afaik) with a 56k modem. I haven't kept up with the bleeding edge modems (especially since it's a rare ISP that does) so I may be wrong.

I'm running a 56k usr external as well. The connection icon always sez I'm connected at 50666 but the actual speed is around 35600 which is consistant with the tests I ran.
