Suddenly now, whenever i boot up my computer, it boots fine, but once in Windows, the desktop is tiny, and all i can see is two large icons that fit the screen, i cannot access display settings because the screen is so small,

Boot into Safe Mode using the [F8] key, or hold down [Ctrl] until you get a boot menu. Change the resolution back to your preferred setting, 800x600 should work, and check the monitor refresh rate. usually 60 works.

If this is a recent change, I don't know if it will work, but try booting into Command Prompt Only when you get to the boot menu, using either of the methods above, and restore the registry.

Once at the C:\> prompt, type:

scanreg_/restore
using a space in place of the underscore ( _ ) used here. CHoose a registry backup made before the problem started, once you get the message saying your registry has been restored, reboot and see if the video settings are back to normal.

If not, I suspest virus. Boot to an emergency boot disk for your virus scanner and see what it comes up with.
