Hi guys! Been a while since my last post. Anyhow, I was really just wondering how to avoid STATIC on your PC.
Is the cause a faulty motherboard? I mean, since screwing your PC together requires metal-to-metal connectiion, wont there really be static? Thing is, I have those protectors in between the screws.
Now here's the problem, recently my RAM went haywire. From 450MB, it went down to 390. Roughly I lost 64MB. Now sometimes when I turn the PC on, all 450 registers in the memory check but the computer hangs (windows xp halts and needs to shut down, something like an IRQ less then etc... error) after around 10 minutes of use. If only 390 registers, then everything's smooth.
Now the PC technician said it might be static, or it might be dead RAM. What do you guys think? How do you cure static?
The static can and will destroy ram. ( Also any other electronic devices )
This happens most often during installation and removal.
Not during normal operation
In the case of a running/working system.
A power surge, Voltage brown out (Drop) and Heat
Can and will cause ram to fail.
Also corrosion on the contacts can cause the memory errors.
Have you removed the memory and cleaned or reseated the sticks?
This sometimes helps and will break the corrosion Cleaning the contacts

josemavicente,
To follow up on the possibility of corrosion that Rick pointed out, I wonder if this might be a routine maintenance concern for you folks living close to saltwater?

He He Yup to everything said, especially salt water looked at a pc at Myrtle Beach SC They never really had much of a problem with it but when i started takeing things apart unbeleivable the corrosion on the case frame and outer caseing of the drives but the board, processor and ramm looked good no corrosion.most of the ramm now have gold contacts so salt doesnt bother it nor does it bother any silver soldered pieces Or if it has been Iodized. only un finished surfaces

Believe me when I say I'm not an electrical
genius.
Do know of one particular Mboard that is problematic
with static caused on the 12v curciut. Causing/creating
data coruption. Static originating from the PSU.
There is a fix for this particular board which includes
soldering an rf choke in place.
Which Motherboard are you using?
Do you have different RAM you could try? Maybe try
using different slots for your memory sticks would
help.

i use an ASUS CUBX motherboard
Well I dont live near saltwater but the weather here dramatically changed over the past few days. In my country its really just WET and DRY. Now its really WET. Last week it was really hot and this week its storming. Trees are starting to fall. Thats how life is here.
Measures:
1. So its best I open my computer up and clean he contacts first right? Does the dop in weather really affect the PC performance? From really hot, it got really cold.

My question would be weather or not (couldn't pass up the pun) the humidity would be partly caused by airborne seawater?
What you might want to try after making sure the RAM contacts are clean and seated is a RAM burn-in utility. If mjc passes by perhaps he can steer you in the right direction if he deems this pursuit appropriate.
Well, humidity can play a part in in corrosion problems.
Another problem is that there is a level of ESD that will not outright fry a component, but will weaken it so that it will fail, usually when subjected to an unusual amount of stress.

thanks for all your help!
weather or not (mwehehehe) its seawater or humidity, ill still try to clean the ram contacts. thanks!
weather here is really cozy. its been raining for three days straight. lots of trees are falling on the roads though.
