My PC is running under Windows'98 with pentium III processor .The PC is going for an auto-shutdown randomly . Everything was fine till last week .After that slowly this problem creeped in . Initially the frequency was 30 minutes and now it came down to 1 minute to 5 minutes . I think no problem because of power connection as when i switch on the machine again win'98 is loading properly without complaining about " Not properly shutdown last time"..

Thanks for your help.

By "auto-shutdown" do you mean that the system reacts as if you had clicked on Start > Shutdown and then displays the normal message when shutting down? Have you made any hardware changes or installed any new software since last week? Is your power source reliable -- no brownouts or surges? Do you have a system "health monitor", which keeps track of temperatures?

No , The shutdown is instant and NO normal shutdown message is thrown. But when my PC is switched on without going for the proper shutdown during the previous attempt Scandisk will be invoked during win98 load and it will say "your PC is not shutdown properly last time" .As i am not getting this kind of message in the said-case i presumed it's a shutdown. I haven't gone for any upgrades in both hardware/software since last week . Please tell me from where i can get "health monitor" utility .

Thanks for your help

HEAT is the cause and the most likely reason is your CPU fan is not working. You need to address this VERY quickly and the best way to validate that it is the fan is to unplug the unit...take off the case cover and then plug it back in ......watch the fan which is attached to the cpu.....if I'm right, it wont come on OR it will only spin VERY slowly. You will need a new fan...they only cost about $15 US.

Exactly you have pointed out the problem. For time being, i have opened the cabinet cover and put an additional table fan pointing towards the unit and the system is running without any interruption for past 2 hours.CPU fan is working but iam not too sure on telling it's slow although it looks slow.Anyway as per your advice i will go ahead and change the fan.

Thanks a lot Randy and tjaymadison.
