Hi, a friend of mine recently installed a faulty hardrive with a new one, reinstalled the operating system (Win 98se) but he is unable to get the computer to detect the modem, before the harddrive was replaced the modem worked well, the computer is only about 2 years old and it has a PnP modem but windows does not see the new hardware to install the drivers, anybody got any idea's?

BTW I have installed the drivers manually.
Some details about the modem....
Some PnP modems require that the drivers are installed first, then the modem is plugged into an open PCI slot.

I am trying to help my friend over the phone, as he lives a few hours away. He is very handfisted, if he takes out the modem he will need a new motherboard, I did mention to him though sometimes its better to take out the modem, reboot without modem in, then shut down and re install the modem.
Also have him try putting the modem in a different PCI slot. Check this link (http://808hi.com/56k/pci.asp) for other troubleshooting ideas.

Hi all, I have been and had a look at this modem setup, the modem it is very small and the slot is not a PCI or ISA slot its sort of a small block connecter/slot. I haven't seen one like this before its very similar to a brown AGP connector.MB
A riser card....even worse than a PCI winmodem.....basically just an interface for hooking up a phone line.
Try pulling it and reinserting it...it may be difficult to find the proper replacement, so you could try a PCI one...or just get a real modem (an external). Also make sure all the current drivers are removed...in Safe mode, before attempting it again.

Im with mjc about getting another modem ..those usually come with barebones kits and preassembled "bargin" computers..when you installed 98SE was that a restore disc that came with the computer or is that a original Microsoft disc?..did you get any driver disc with teh computer? the Microsoft disc more than likely wont have a driver for that..but it should detect it as a unknown device or something to that effect. if you dont have drivers for that modem you need to pull the modem,,grab the name and chipset # on the modem and try www.driverzone.com ..look up the manufactures site and download the drivers..install them..shutdown ..reinstall the modem and reboot.

Yep...AMR or Audio/Modem Riser (http://www.aopen.com/tech/techinside/amr.htm)
Very good description Here (http://www.pcmech.com/show/modems/10/)

BTW I have installed the drivers manually.
Which ones, where from and how?
If the modem was satisfactory for your friend prior to the reinstall it will cost nothing but "webtime" to get and install the latest drivers from the modem maker or if the pc was an OEM (which sounds likely) then better still from the pc maker's website; and follow their instructions.
