View Full Version : No Power to System!!

Ok, I know, I did something very foolish and now I'm paying for it. I was switching out my cd-rom with my cd/rw. I hit the power cord for the cd rom on some of the pins on the back of the cd rom when reinstalling (by the way, I left the computer on while doing this which was a mistake, obviously). When I hit it though, all power drained out and will not turn back on. I'm wondering if I blew a fuse or if I fried something. Any help???????????
Sounds bad. The only mistake - and it WAS a big one - was doing anything inside the case with the power on.
One thing I don't understand - the power cable is kind of "recessed" in the plastic cover - did you actually "stick" the power connector "into" the data pins of the CD? If so, I'd be amazed if the CD "wasn't" fried.
I wouldn't think that it would fry your MB, or hurt your power supply. But apparently it did? Unless you knocked something loose in your case - such as a card, ram, cpu, or a connector - I don't see what would cause a totally dead system except for a bad MB or Power Supply.
Good luck,
Don

Be VERY careful if you try this...
Remove the power supply, open it and look for a fuse. Replace it with the same fuse, if it's blown, which I think is likely.
The power supply is NOT an item to tinker with carelessly, it has capacitors that can hold electrical charges for days, if you are the least bit uncomfortable about that, take it to a computer shop.
Now my honest opinion? Take it to the shop, let them open it.
If it's not a fuse, chances are the power supply is gone, and will have to be replaced. The only ways I know of to prove it are
1. Try a different power supply.
2. Take it to a shop and let them test it.
Since you were working with power on, there is a good chance the motherboard could be fried, or any of several other components. If you have the parts necessary, I would start testing everything in the machine on another motherboard and power supply.

If all you took out was the Power Supply, consider yourself VERY lucky http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Since power supply's are fairly inexpensive relative to Motherboards, Hard Drives etc....your boo-boo might not cost you too much (usually this sort of thing is confined to the Power Supply). Let us know what the result was.
