I have an HP Scanjet 5p that I have been trying to get working on my main comp for 2 days now. The scanner works fine on an older pc with an ISA SCSI card. I purchased an inexpensive PCI SCSI card for the newer pc because I didn't think I would need anything elaborate just to run a scanner.

Any way the SCSI was recognized by W98SE and appeared to install without a hitch. It shows up in the boot screen as being recognized and working. Either of the 2 scanner softwares on the other hand will not install properly. I have tried to install through the 'Scanner and Cameras' part of 'Control Panel', have also tried through 'Add/Remove Programs' and also tried just clicking on the install icon in 'Program Files' (where I D/L'ed the software to).

Each time between I have uninstalled the software to avoid doubling up and causing more problems. I have tried installing the software BEFORE plugging the scanner in to the comp, I have tried installing the software AFTER plugging the scanner in.

The weird part of it all is now upon boot up I have a spot the boot process hangs and says that it needs a "Hpsjvxd.vxd" (driver?) for the device loaded. I have to press the "ANY KEY" to continue. Then I get to a point it is trying to find drivers on reboot. There must be 8 to 10 or so drivers that Windows can't find, I get an insert W98SE prompt but when I do it won't let me direct it to the proper drivers or it says, "cannot find needed driver in the location specified.

Anyone have a surefire way of getting these scanners to go in without any trouble? WHAT am I doing wrong??? I have had a similar problem with a printer that was resolved by installing the drivers onto 2 floppy disks with the supplied "make disks" software. I will try next to find a similar engine to do the same but I don't think there is one and also the other pc has never needed that approach and it works fine there.

I'm almost to the point of a reformat AGAIN!!! AARRGGHH  I just got up and running a week ago, now this. How can I remove the error message in the boot process without a reformat? How good do these scanners BURN in a barrel if I may ask??

The scanner software may have something trying to load when you bootup, go to Run and type the msconfig command and then to the startup tab to make sure something isnt checked to load. Remove all software for the scanner, shutdown, unplug the scanners and reboot and see if it still is looking for anything upon reboot. Then go to the Device Manager and make sure the PCI card you added isnt conflicting with any other hardware. Then reinstall the scanner software ..shut down, plug the scanner up and reboot.

As for the burning in a barrel..ive found 220 volts does alot better job and ya wont pollute the air:D

Don’t drop that Scanner into the Barrel Just yet

First thing to look at are the Scsi card options you have.
Check the card for a control program.
if it has one and the scanner is the only device connected to it.
Set the cards I/O speed to 5MPS

Also check for termination on the card
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q168094
The termination should be at the device
If the Scsi card has Both internal and external connectors then it needs to be terminated at BOTH

Don’t feel alone here.
I still have one scanner that refuses to be seen correctly by windows XP
Yes it is listed in device manager , ( All 8 copies of itself )

After installing my ScanJet I get the following error when booting to Windows 98: 'Could not load device driver HPSJVXD.VXD...' I can't find HPSJVXD.VXD on the HP CD which came with the scanner. Where can I find it? (http://www.duxcw.com/faq/scanners/scan.htm) sounds similar but in Win98. Maybe you can get the files from the installaton CD or from HP.

Thanks for the replies,

I had help from mjc and between the missing drivers and a little discovery of some needed to be checked boxes in Control Panel, (that the other 2 softwares did NOT need) it is working well.

I am looking over those links and will save their text for future referrence.

Thanks, I'm a happy scanner uh, camper once again. :D

It'd be nice to know how you solved it Fruss. ;)

Sure Paul,

Sorry. Didn't know you cared... :p I had a good explanation all typed out but went 'rambling' with the back arrow.

Enter "Murphy's Law"!

So I wrote a newer condensed answer that wasn't a good explanation. Mostly it was a lesson learned in knowing where to look for files that aren't installed on your HDD with normal OS auto-installs. There was a half dozen or so that needed to be retrieved, some from the 98SE disk.

I'm not sure that I put them where they should be but it works so close enough. I'll start a thread on placement soon.

The one file that was interrupting the boot-up was addressed first with the help from mjc and it immediately took care of THAT problem. The others (missing drivers), some on 98SE and some on the scanner software, didn't make much difference until I found an oddly placed set of boxes that needed to be checked before the scanner would operate.

I finally found it rather accidentally in: Start> Settings> Control Panel> Scanners and Cameras> highlighted HP Scanjet 5p> Properties> Events Tab. There is 5 items in there that were not selected (checked off) by default. Now that I checked them all, it works like a charm.

So the newest software I D/L'ed is working fine but isn't that impressive over the older ones, AAMOF there's some extras on the original one that aren't on the newer like PaperPort and Image Editor that I may install as well for the added features. Later.

Anyway, all's well that end's well,
Thanks all,
The Happy Scanner ;)

PS
Randy,
How would I know if there was a conflict?
Got your link too but haven't D/L'ed any rare footage, YET.

Rick,
The PCI SCSI card is listed in boot-up as working fine. The scanner is listed twice in the msconfig start-up tab but only once in Device Manager. It ain't broke, I ain't fixin' it.

Thanks Fruss. It was the check boxes I was wondering about most - but now I understand. BTW I think PaperPort is a useful and easy to use application - and can keep scans, faxes, pics etc nicely ordered (and by pointing the default folder to a separtate partition, if you want, for ease of backing-up).

Paul,

Thanks for opening my eyes to the fact that PaperPort is a fax manager. I wasn't aware and have been working at setting up a fax program for my comp. This is half the reason for the scanner.

I have been unable to get the Windows one to work (in Old Windows 95 folder on the 98SE disk) but I think I have part of Norton's working so far and the drag and drop part of Norton's I have found the drivers it requests but don't know where to put them yet, ergo my new thread.

One step at a time,,, Simon Says!?! You may take ONE baby step forward. "May I?" :p

Sid,

Glad you like it. Want a pic?

Fruss sorry - PaperPort is not a "Fax Program"; but it can open an installed Fax Program directly, just as it is an interface between your scanner and many other applications like Word, Graphics Applications, Printer, etc.

A fairly recent thread How do I Fax? (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9062&h) addressed this issue.

What it is good for is keeping all such graphical files (and a fax is just another graphic file in its own format) organised. eg Scan a document and then Print, Fax, View, Edit it.
