View Full Version : Brief power on, then nothing

My system:
Tyan tiger 133 (dual slot 1), 2x P-III coppermine 700s
2x 64mb pc100 sdram
16 meg Asus v3400 tnt card (agp)
When I power up the system, the cpu fan will spin for about half a second, then shuts down. The cd-rom light also blinks once. I've tried stripping the system to bare bones (basically what is pictured above), and still the same problem arises. Checked the connectors and jumpers - everything is fine. I've also tried the system with one processor and a terminator card, but no progress. My guess would be either a bad power supply or a bad mobo; I'm hoping it's the former.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

If you are trying to do this system with less than a big ass power supply (say 400 watts or more) the PS could well be your problem. By the way you describe startup, it seems more like power supply than anything else, but I'm not a real good source on these dual processor setup's. The fact that it boots for a second or so and then shuts off sounds a LOT like a short to me though. Hopefully someone else will weigh in on this one soon for ya.

I'll agree with a short too. Try it on a table with only CPU, video card, RAM and keyboard. If it boots, it's a short. Get some cardboard washers from a computer shop and put them between motherboard and chassis.

Was this system running before or is it a freshly built system? The reason I ask is because that when I recently built my first system with an ATX supply, it did that too when the power was first applied from the power switcher, but it ran normally when I hit the "soft" power button on the front. The many AT systems I built don't act that way since there is no "soft" power control. If it is powering down right after hitting the front button, then it sounds like a short circuit or weak power supply.

Thanks for all of the assistance, everyone!
Update: I tried placing the mobo on a static free mat (the foam bit that comes with the board) and hooked up the CPUs, Video card, and RAM. When I hit the power switch, I get the same deal - on for about a second, then nothing. I know that at least the AGP/PCI bus, the processor fans, and the cd-drive get power for the brief moment they do.
I also forgot to mention that I'm running a 250 Watt power supply. It's a decently new system (about a month); I've pretty much filled my PCI slots and have been running with both processors.. could this have been too large a load for the meager supply to handle?
Anyhow, thanks again!

Absolubably...for just the hardware you listed in your original post you'd need a 300W power supply, and with PCI slots full plus dual CPUs you might even need 400W.
A side note also, I don't know what OS you're planning to run, but if it's win98 or ME (Please tell me no..please tell me no ME...) neither one supports dual CPUs very well, NT or win 2000 would be the only way to go.

Yep - 'twas the power supply.. booted fresh with a 350-watter and I once more heard the reassuring POST beep! HOoray!
Many thanks to all of you.

Pete was being KIND when he said that Win98 & Me "dont support a dual processor very well"....what he would have added (if he werent such a nice guy http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif) is that a Dual Processor setup WONT go any faster than ONE processor....the Win95 kernal (which is in both 98 & Me) doesn't understand dual anything http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
