View Full Version : defrag
Defrag stops at 27% every time. I have turned off all tasks except systray and explorer, but still does not work. I have rebooted and tried in safe mode--still no luck.
Ideas????

try it is DOS http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
First run SCANDISK to make sure your Hard Drive surface doesn't have any probs. If it does, SCANDISK may be abel to fix them. Then Defrag should run fine.
You should always run Scandisk from a DOS prompt. From START/SHUTDOWN choose RESTART IN DOS MODE. At the C: prompt type SCANDISK and when prompted choose SURFACE/THOROUGH scan.
For Defrag you want to close all your background apps. Go to START/RUN and type MSCONFIG. On the STARTUP tab uncheck everything and reboot. This will give you a clean boot to run Defrag. You can go back and re-check whatever STARTUP apps you want. You can also boot into SAFE MODE to run Defrag - keep tapping F8 while pc boots, and choose SAFE MODE from the boot menu.
Good luck,
Don

Defrag won't work in DOS, unless you have DOS actually installed. With win 95 or 98 on a FAT32 hard drive, and DOS not installed, it will tell you the program must be run under Windows.
I use this command line for a thorough, unattended scandisk, in DOS (command prompt actually).
scandisk_C:_/autofix_/nosummary_/surface
Use spaces in place of the underscores used here. That runs scandisk automatically, without the pop up windows asking if you want to fix errors, and runs a surface scan as well, which you need to do.
Use the [F8] key to get to the boot menu as described above, or hold down [Ctrl] while booting, and choose Command Prompt Only to run scandisk. Then run Defrag, usually in normal mode will work, but you might need to try it in Safe Mode, as suggested above.

I pretty much tried everything suggested except running in scandisk and defrag in DOS. I did run them in safe mode and with all apps closed except systray and explorer????
