Hi there i need a hint on how to get rid of Win ME and install Win98 SE
instead (if that is possible). I tried on my pc but it came up with "older version...unable to...and disabled the setup button on the win98 CD.
What i do not understand is that when on the dos prompt and when typing
ver... it comes up as win98.....but the window logo shows "millenium"
Basically i do not like winme....
my pc is as follow:
factory built (hic..) PIII 866 Intel with ATX board (socket PGA 370), 128 Mb of mem, with basic window apps i.e. word
BIOS setup currently on default...(should all be ok anyway)

That would depend on the system. If it's something like a Compaq with a system restore disk, you may not be able to do it. Some machines are not quite as difficult, you can format the drive and install whatever OS you want. But to go from ME to win98 you'll have to format the drive. Let us know what brand the machine is, then we'll be able to offer better advice.

I'm not sure about Dell, HP, or Gateway, but if this is a Compaq, it can't be done. The Compaq saves part of the BIOS on the second partition, and if you format the drive and try to install another OS without the Restore Disk, you lose that portion of the BIOS. Other factory machines may be different, some of the other folks here may know.

There actually is a way to do it even on a Compaq; however, you have to put the Bios on a floppy (if it's the older vintage of Compaq).

HP should be ok, it just won't be "supported". Basically Hp tech support only supports the OS that shipped on the machine, I suppose that some of the others are like that also.
