Im not too good at hardware etc on my comps.
I have two both older pc100 models with slower speeds...
1 is a hodgepodge of system parts that I put together myself ....
pentium celeron 366MHZ etc...the other is an IBM celeron with an even slower speed.
heres the question.....
the IBM is down bad...Im getting a reboot screen of somekind that I have never seen before, and cant get into cmos etc to do anything with it.
having this screen...looks like a simplified floppy grouping on f1
I want to take the bad drive out and slave it to the comp that runs...and interleave then reload windows in it from the same comp.....
is this possible???

I'm easily confused and this one did a doozey on me, but if you have one hard drive that is bad, why not put the good one in the computer you want to use and reformat and use that one?

Hi....lol..the old one isnt bad..it is just so messed up I cant use it right now...what Im thinking about doing is slaving it to my fav comp and then wiping the old info from it...then re downloading windows to it and putting it in its old place. is that a viable option?
thnks for the reply!

I would go the IBM web site (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm) and download their wipe program (or ZAP for a quicky) or Go to GregoryBraun.com he has some very nice hose your HDD things. I have had a couple of years with the IBM utilities and they work exactly as advertised. It will render your HDD naked as high noon.
For the record most people don't and shouldn't do a LLF. If done improperly it will turn your HDD into a paperweight (trust me on that)
A LLF resets the interleaves, intervals, clusters , etc. I do this stuff for a living and unless the customer absolutely and in writing requests it, and there is a software from the HDD manufacturer, I won't touch it with a fork (justifiably paranoid)
Keep in touch

use Debug it's standard with any 98/ME boot disk ( in the EBD.cab file ) and it will blow away any file system so you can re-partition and format over, this is especially useful if you suspect a virus. To many zero wipe programs take forever and don't always properly work, whereas Debug will only take long enough for you to type in the parameters and reboot-and you'll have a nice fresh clean hard drive to start over with.
Search the forums for a posting i did on how to use Debug.

Once you DO format it, what do you have for an operating system to put on it?
It sounds to me like you plan on copying files from HD to the other. This is tedious to say the least and I've never heard of it being done.
If you have the backup disk for IBM and the system is not the original, you're out of luck there too.
Are you sure you don't want to take a shot at repairing it while still assembled in it's normal case? We could try to help make sure you have set it up right and if something is found just slightly out of step it could put you on track without having to set up 2 hard-drives in the other machine. Will the PSU be able to handle the extra load?
What OS is it? Do you have a boot disk made up and write protected? Have you gone to the mobo site to find out how to get into the BIOS and what to do to set it up for your CPU? Was it running previously? If a virus you may have a boot virus and fixing the HDD and reinserting it will get you nowhere.
I would assume a file for file transfer is possible if needed but an operating sys. disk is SO much easier.
This isn't a test, just a quiz... ;)
