Anybody know of a down fall to splicing the smaller FD internal power plug with a larger internal power HD plug?
I ran out of larger plugs from my power supply, and simply spliced in a larger to a smaller from my older system.

Although the voltage is probably the same, the actual wires(being smaller) are possibly not able to handle the additional heat created by your new use of them on what I assume is a IDE device......maybe a "Electrical Guru" can educate us both on this.....I believe it will work, but how long or well...who knows? Another way to do it possibly is to go to an electronics store and purchase a "Y" type extension which accomplishes the same thing with same sized wiring.

They go from 22awg to 18awg, so I was thinking the same thing... for now ok, but for how long. I will look for a Y connector.
Thanks....
18awg wire has a max current rating of about 5 amps, 22awg has a rating of about 2 amps, these are continuous current ratings so peak current would be somewhat higher, a 7200 rpm Seagate drive uses 2.2 amps at startup (that would be a peak value) so you are cuttting it close, but since it doesn't use that much all the time then you'd be ok for a while, but the chance of failure would increase as the wire ages. So for a long term solutin--use a splitter.

Great Info... Thanks!

The splitter should be about $4 at RadioShack maybe cheaper elsewhere, but if you don't want to wait.....
If you want to know if you've overheated the wire, after you get the splitter, strip some insulation where you made the splice and if the copper looks blue then it got hot. Also make sure you cover the splice point with tape, reduces risk of a short.
