I am in the process of fixing up an old computer to give to a friend of my sister who can't afford one. I have put in an old modem that I have, but I can't install the drivers because I don't know what the modem brand is. It is labeled "Wincom 56SLM" and has some other numbers and serial number, but no brand. I have searched google several times looking for drivers that might work and even registered on a site to download one, but no luck getting the download. The computer is going to have Win95 and it doesn't even have drivers for 56K modems.

I am looking for any ideas on how to find out the brand, how to find a generic driver that would work or any other ideas about how to get this thing working properly. I have another PCI modem, but I can't tell what that one is either. The Wincom is an ISA modem.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

HI, Try looking at the chips on the modem, they may have a name you may recognise such as Rockwell or motorola. you may then be able to add this to your search and find the driver you are looking for.

I checked the modem and it has Lucent chips, but I am not sure how this will help me find a driver. Any clues about how to use this info?

Thanks.

A fairly good starting point for 56k Modems HERE (http://modemsite.com/56k/index.asp)

pauls reply is very informative...in fact digging deeper I found something about your "lucent" chipset,
try this - http://modemsite.com/56k/ltwin.asp

there you should find what you are looking for :) (hopefully)

Thanks for the suggestion for that site, it was very helpful. In fact, I wish I had known about it this AM and I would have saved several hours of searching today. I have downloaded a driver and will be trying it later today - hopefully it will turn out to be the right one.

Thanks.
