ok heres my problem. lately my system has beeen insanely slow to the point where it takes a couple minutes for it to actually do something like if you click on something. it used to do this once in a while, it does it alot now. i was wondering why it does this, maybe its the motherboard, i dont know. i am running win 98 se, amd athlon 750 mhz processor, 128 ram, etc.
First when was the last time you ran defrag? Been a while, never? Then you should run defrag. To speed it up a little you should also shut off everything running in the background, type msconfig in the run box go to the start up tab and then uncheck everything, then reboot, then run defrag (either from the icon in the start menu or from the run box - type in defrag and then <enter> ), after defrag is done reboot, msconfig then check the Normal Starup on the first page.
Also, make a note of whatis running in the background, under normal operation you don't need much; Explorer, Systray, and taskmon (maybe a few others depending on your system). Post back with the background programs and we'll try to figure out what you don't need.
You can boot into 'safe mode' (from msconfig you can turn on the startup menu advanced -> startup menu). When in safe mode go to the system applet on the control panel and check in Devic Manager to see if there are any duplicate devices (CD drives, hard drvies, etc.) if there are more than one you can remove them (one at a time and rebooting between each one is best) but leave one copy (usually the last). If Windows doesn't "find" it again then it was just taking up space and slowing down your system.
