System specs:Athlon 1700xp
Asus A7V333, VIA KT33 chipset
512mb pc2100 ddr sdram
Gainward 32mb Ti 4200 GeForce 4
XP home OS

A friend and I built this system recently.Everything was fine and I detected no problems or conflicts, until I discovered that my new video card wouldn't play Warcraft 3.Instead, I got an error message explaining that the game required a dx8 compatible video adapter! Last I checked a Gainward Ti 32mb 4200 GeForce 4 is dx8 compatable. Then I ran the dxdiag test in the run program, and the card failed the dx8 portion of the test.

The first thing I suspected was a driver issue. But I am using the latest drivers from Nvidia and the latest 4in1 drivers for the VIA chipset.Next I suspected a faulty card.I uninstalled it and reinstalled it in my old computer,a P3 500.The card passed thedx8 test no problem. So the card is fine.

The card performs fine on the old Pentium machine, but not on this new AMD hot rod gaming rig!

I am kind of stumped at this point. Is there some kind of configuration in the system BIOS I could change or tweak that might resolve this issue? As Dr. Evil said in that Austin Powers movie, "Can someone throw me a bone here?"

Your song sounds the same as mine only some of the words are different. I've been having 3d gaming issues since I put a working XFX Ti4200 on my new K7VTA3 mobo 3 weeks ago. My problem has been that as soon as a 3d game starts it hangs the system. My card does pass the DXDIAG however.

See my thread in this forum (don't know how to do links here yet) titled "Video Card Problem?" from 7/18. I'm sorry I can't give you a resolution since I've found none for mine. But I can tell you after scouring this and the VIAARENA 4in1 discussion forum there are a number of issues out there that involve combinations of the VIA drivers and GF4 cards/drivers. They aren't card manufacturer or OS specific either as you can imagine the possibilities.

I've been through the recommended driver combo's folowing instructions carefully and nothing seems to help. Symptoms change slightly but the new games won't play. My case and CPU temps are fine.

I was about to try a new card and even go to XP from 98SE. With all the different scenarios I've read about lately I finally decided to go with a true GF3 or maybe one of the Ti's. It may not be "killer" since GF4 arrived but it will suit my needs and I believe I'll be stable which is more important to me.

Sounds like you are having a different problem than me.The only problem with my card on the AMD computer is the incompatibility with dx8.Games never lock, crash, or freeze. In fact, all my Quake 3 engine based games run fine.Jedi Knight 2,Return to Castle wolf.,Quake 3 Arena, all run without a hitch.

The only games I have found that won't run are Warcraft 3, and Max Payne. In both cases instead of running the game, I get an error message saying I need a dx8 compatable card.

Yes sounds different. Ironically Max Payne will actually run for a short while for me. Most won't start. There is a DX81b update in case you hadn't tried that. Good Luck!

The other thing is that my old GeForce 2 card fails the dx8 test in the AMD computer exactly like the GeForce 4 does. Both video cards pass the dx8 test in the PIII 500 computer, both fail in the new AMD computer. Both computers are running XP home operating system. It must be an issue with the AMD processor, or the motherboard, or the RAM or a combination of all three. These are the only differences between the two computers,I think.

Thank you Yoda74! I went back to some earlier posts looking for someone with my problem.I found one, and Yoda74 posted the fix of going into the dxdiag program and toggling the enabled/disabled buttons off and back on again. It worked !! All hail yoda74!!

I have been agonizing over this for over a week! My dx8 compatibility is solved. Here are the test results:
No problems found.
