are the COM ports integrated on the mother board or on a seperate card?

yup! its an asus motherboard. atx... just bought it last may 2002..
additional info:
when i plug a serial mouse to comm1 windows doesn't say it cannot detect a serial mouse. so that means that it had detected my mouse. but my mouse doesn't work. DOS applications doesn't detect my mouse too..
You can try to reset the BIOS setttings for the port. If there is a default or auto setting use that if not then manually set them to IRQ4 and 3F8 for address.

Did you check the BIOS to make sure that Serial port 1 wasn't disabled?
If it isn't disabled in BIOS, I would assume that something has happened to the motherboard and that serial port no longer works, period. Any problems with any of the other ports (LPT, ps2, usb...)? Good luck.

i'm sure i had it all right. My comm1 just started not to function. If the defect is with the MBoard, do i have any chance of fixing it?
