View Full Version : DSL log on problem.

For about the last week and a half when I log onto the web with my DSL service I have to wait while the MailWasher goes through initializing, trying password, waiting for authentication and a couple other steps I don't remember. It used to just load immediately when my modem connected. It also occasionally hangs on "waiting for authentication", but when I close the program and open it again, it is usually fine. I have tried it on other programs and they are delayed substantially too, so it is not just MailWasher.

I checked with my ISP and they say nothing is wrong. I checked with Qwest which provides the DSL and they said nothing is wrong with my line, but they sent me another modem because I kept getting dropped offline for no reason - that seems to be better now.

I deleted Zone Alarm and installed the latest version after checking to see if that made a difference. It didn't. My ISP thinks it is Qwest, Qwest thinks the modem was the problem, I don't know. I haven't installed any programs that should have effected it in the last couple of weeks and I ran AdAware to check for lurking programs. I did startup a program that turned out to be adware, but I thought I had deleted all traces of it, so I don't think that is it. I have Ontracks suite, so I could run their registry cleaners and see if that helps. I'll try that, but I would appreciate any other suggestions anyone might have as well. I am mostly concerned that this could reflect a bigger underlying problem.

Thanks,
Budfred

Have you tried diabling mail washer?

Does that change anything

Are you using Winpoet?

If you are, this program is cranky and can cause all kinds of conflicts.

You are better off, getting a router and uninstalling the Winpoet software.

I have logged on without using MailWasher and I upgraded to the latest version, but neither have made a difference. I don't know what Winpoet is, so I am pretty sure that I am not using it.

I did find out that there was an upgrade for my DSL modem driver and installed it, but it didn't make any difference either.

Winpoet is the software that many DSL providers (especially Verison) use to imitate the dial up adapter.

Whenever I have a client who opts for DSL I always recommend a router to avoild and DSL modem software

One of my computers has a somewhat similiar problem and what has helped is not auto loading ZoneAlarm.

Update:

I was using Timbuktu 2000 this weekend and when I shut it down and logged onto the web again, the problem with delayed logging was gone. Even though it hadn't been running, apparently it was effecting my logging on. Any ideas about how this could have happened?

Thanks,
Budfred

Can you reproduce these results?

Is Timbuku set to use TCPIP?

It depends on how you are logging on.

Who is your DSL provider?

How do you log-on exactly? What icon do you click on??

I only use Timbuktu to try (unsuccessfully thus far) to control my sister's computer to help her maintain it, she's about a thousand miles away. I load it from the Start menu and close it as soon as I am done. I was trying to connect using her email address, using LDAP in Timbuktu and finally managed to connect last weekend by having her email me her IP address and entering that. I use QWest DSL and a local ISP to connect to the web and I usually log on using MailWasher, but the delay was happening no matter what I used to log on. I haven't tried Timbuktu again since last weekend and my log on has been fine except during a storm last night. I don't know if using Timbuktu will mess things up again, but I will probably find out on Sunday since I will probably try to control my sister's computer again.

Do you know much about Timbuktu? I only get a black window when I connect with my sister's system using her IP, so I can't do the maintenance that I am logging in to do. Any idea about what would cause that?

Thanks,
Budfred

I haven't used TB2 for 5 years and then it was on a MAC.

I use pc-Anywhere and I am pretyy happy with it.

To connect over the net, you will need to have the hosts (your sisters) IP address.

You will have to setup a user or guest or caller or whatever they call it on the host computer. You will have to give it a login name and password and asign the user rights.

You will have to have the same login info on the remote (yours) computer so when you logon your TB2 sends a user name and PW that the host will recognize and allow access..

classicsoftware,

Thanks for the feedback. I did all of those things and still couldn't get it to work properly. I am holding off trying again and I think I will uninstall and reinstall Timbuktu before I try again. Maybe I can figure it out that way.

I tried PCAnywhere first, but it wouldn't let me do anything without an IP address and so I got Timbuktu to use the email address option. That didn't work either and then someone here suggested getting my sis to email me the dynamic IP that was used for that session and I was able to connect, I just couldn't do anything. Maybe I'll go back to PCAnywhere and try that again using the IP address thing.

The problem with trying this with a dynamic IP is that every time she reconnects the IP will be different. So if she gets disconnected during a session you will have to start all over after she emails (or IM..instant messages) the IP.

pc Anywhere will allow you to search for an Ip address if you know a little about the provider. So it will work even with dynamic IP addressing. Thanks for the link and idea, I'll give it a try if I can't get Timbuktu to work.
