Something weird happen when I went to the Logitech website site to get the latest version to update my mouse driver. I'm using the Logitech MouseMan Optical. After downloading the mouse update I was asked to reboot. After my reboot it took me back to my desktop but my cursor wouldn't move, I even tried to navigate using the tab key and arrow keys but it all appeared to be locked up. So I rebooted again....same thing happened. So I tried using "System Restore" and went back one day earlier. Still it was all locked up. So I tried Safe Mode... pressed enter and it locks up again. I'm using Windows XP Home edition. Anyone know how I can just get this thing back up and running the way it was.

If you can get around your desktop at all there are several things you could try.
1. Go to Device Manager, delete your Mouse, reboot and install your original mouse software.
2. Run msconfig (if available in XP) and check to see what programs are loading at startup. If necessary, go through and uncheck them all except the ones you are pretty certain are safe and reboot adding back one at a time for each reboot. If you mouse still doesn't work on the first reboot, then the rest won't help either.
3. Check your bios settings for your mouse to see if anything might be interfering at that level. You probably want to check the keyboard settings as well.
4. Try the mouse and keyboard icons in Control Panel to see if there is anything in either set of properties that could account for the problems.
5. Try using another mouse and see if the problem persists. A standard PS/2 mouse would probably be best for this purpose.
Good luck,

At this point everything is locked up at the desktop, so I can't navagate to the control panel or any where else. I will check the Bios settings if I can get there, but these settings should all be the same since it all worked before my upgrade to the new drivers?
thanks for the feedback,

You're right, they should all be the same. If they are different it means that the install of the new software somehow changed them and that could account for the problems. I don't honestly know if an install program can do that, but it is worth checking if you can access it. I would also urge you to try the alternate mouse after unplugging you Logitech mouse to see if you can then access your system and check some of the other things.
Oh, BTW, I am not sure if you can do this with XP, but you may be able to do a bootup where you confirm each program as it loads and you could choose to not load the mouse driver to see if that helps, especially if you have an alternate mouse attached.
Good luck,
Budfred
You didn't mention if it is a wireless mouse...if it is try changing the batteries.
Also try disconnecting it and see if it still locks up...you will probably get an error stating no mouse installed but if it doesn't lock up you should be able to navigate with the keyboard and then remove the drivers.

I "think" I tried about everything. So now am off to reformatting.

Is the mouse USB or PS2?
If it is USB, try disconnecting it and installing a ps2 mouse temporarily. then try to reboot. some systems sulk if a usb device goes ape - it screws everything up.
If it is a PS2 mouse, disconnect it, leaving just your keyboard (try to use a ps2 one if you can) and see if that helps - again, conflicts can cause all sorts of problems.
THe PS2 connectors usually have a reserved IRQ/DMA, so they are less likely to cause problems.
