http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif everytime i turn off my PC or restart my PC it will not boot up right away. If i wait for a while and turn it on it boots up just fine. any suggestions HELP ME Please Thanks.
Ps i am running win95. My tower is about 4 years old Pentium Class 100mhz 16 ram ....Just a baby but i love it lol. Thanks
When you restart it, do you see any of the normal boot process, such as memory check and hard drive detection? At what point does it halt?
Heat may be one possibility. Maybe the CPU fan has stopped or the heat sink is clogged with dust. Check for airflow through the power supply fan too. It seems more likely that a heat problem would affect the system while it is running, but since it is OK after being powered down, it makes me suspect heat.

Although the sound card problem may be coincidental, you might want to try removing it in the Device Manager, then power down and physically remove the card, then try booting again. See if there are any conflicts noted in the Device Manager with the sound card or any other device.

It sounds like a autoexec.bat or config.sys problem. A possible way of finding out is when you boot the computer, and the splash screen pops up, hit the Esc key to bypass it and view what is going on. The scrren will revert back to the prompt and show you what it is doing, i.e, loading sevice drivers for sound, etc... Watch to see if it stops at a specific point during startup. Hope this helps.

Q188867 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q188/8/67.ASP) pertains more to win98 but might help. Check Bud Allen (http://www.webteam.cc/~budallen/95wizard.html) too. I think Post Code is very close, something in autoexec.bat or config.sys hanging up, or a driver that's not loading right. Maybe a corrupt system file. At that point in the boot process it's loading drivers and running autoexec.bat and config.sys, so that's where I would think the problem is.
The MSKD article above has instructions for going through a step by step boot so you can isolate what is causing the problem.
I also agree that the sound card issue may be at peast part of it. Try booting in Safe Mode, remove it from Device Manager, and remove it from the motherboard as described above. Remove ALL sound devices found while in Safe Mode.

This has been happening for a while now and it was not to bad to deal with at first but even to add new hardware takes forever..... You all have been very kind and i really need to rack your brains again lol... there is a cluster i cannnot lose it is about 150.000 big and a real pain in the a**....... Oh yea Ps.
this problem of not being able to restart right away also applies to reformatting too. At anytime i have to shutdown the PC it will not turn on again only if you leave it for a while.
Thanks Again.....
This is a strange problem. If you boot from a floppy, will it boot to the floppy again after pushing reset, or does it still need to be left off for a while?

Hi again Reid, most of the time it will boot from a floppy , I have been on now for about fours straight and the Pc works great. I had a idea of a heat issue but you would think that it would effect me while i am up and running. If i was to turn it off right now i would not be able to go live (not being in safe mode) for about a half an hour to a hour. Makes me scratch my head too...lol
I have reformatted about five times since owning this system all other atempts worked great ( phantom port for the modem, installing the sound driver) etc ... but the last couple of times i started having this really crazy problem with the shutdown and the restart..H ave you never come across this problem with anyone else before i know it is strange...
My last major problem was my last reformat with my msoffice 2000 installed
it was still holding on to some files even after a fdisk format....
they are gone now but installing the last time took (no joke) two days straight...with this crazy restart prob.
You must be scratching your head as well lol...
Thanks Again Reid.
This is the first system I have heard of with this symptom. I also never heard of files on the hard drive surviving partitioning and formatting, although I am aware that the data can remain on the disk, but for practical purposes, the data is gone. It does make me wonder if somehow the hard drive may be at fault.
If the BIOS is set to boot from the floppy first, and if you can get the system to boot repeatedly without waiting, then I think it would point more to a possible hard drive problem.
