This may be way too obvious, but the first thing I would do is really clean the slot that the memory goes into really well to make sure it isn't just a bad connection.
I would also check to make sure the EDO RAM is the same type, although I don't think the computer can use either if it can't use both. It seems odd that it can even register half since EDO usually requires a matched set.
Another possibility is that the RAM slot is damaged and that would not be good.
Good luck,
Budfred
First, you have an Intel 430 chipset, so I wouldn't waste any time trying to get it above 64MB....it has a problem caching large amounts of memory than that.
Second, if you really want to try make sure that the memory is for that board...if it is double sided it may be only reading 1/2 of each stick. Try just one stick and see what you get.

buy I have a similiar question.
older dell pentium mmx, has one EDO slot and 2 simm slots. This machine was reading 32mbs ram, I added another 32mb simm and it now reads 40mbs RAM, why only an 8mb increase when adding another 32mbs??
Thank you all for the reply. I believe MJC suggestion about the double
sided simm not being read on this board is the answer.
Thank you again

Kala: I may be incorrect, but I think the i430VX chipset only supports sticks up to 64mb, but as MJC pointed out, don't bother with anything higher than a total of 64mb or the system will slow to a crawl.
Sea: Are you sure the stick is 32mb?? Maybe it's only 8mb? Have you tried with just that stick and if so, did the system report it as 32mb? If so, then at a loss here. Try that stick in the first slot and the older stick in the second slot and see what it reads then.

A internet search indicates 128 MB. But because of the information about
64MB the max to use from you and MJC I will reduce the memory to 64mb. I was able to get 80 mb with to other sticks of 16mb each. They also read half.
Thank you for all the help.

Another reason, and probably the correct one, is that the chipset is designed to only read 2-clock SDRAM. You probably have 4-clock SDRAM, which would explain why it's only reading half.
I used to have a board with that chipset and I remember that I had the same problem with the system only reading one-half the memory I tried to install. The manufacturer of the board explained about the different clocks. Most, if not all, SDRAM you get nowadays is 4-clock.

Thank you for the additional information it all helps

Sea: My Dell board with this chipset did the same: only saw 8MB when I installed a "modern" 32MB SDRAM.
