Hi kueijie,

PC Maintenance usually includes running scandisk, defragging the HDD, emptying the temp. files, deleting the tif. (temp. internet files), deleting all the cookies that you don't need, running a virus scan, uninstalling programs that you don't use, using a program such as SPIDER (http://www.fsm.nl/ward/) to clean out the index.dat files, keeping the dust out of the case, and brushing your teeth twice a day...:D

I'd also include: occasionally opening the case and blowing out the dust, especially from the CPU heatsink/fan. Aerosal products called "canned air" are available for this. Don't have the computer running, but leave it plugged in so it remains grounded. This will minimize the possible build-up of static electricity, which can ruin components. Miniature vacuums are sold, but blowing works better for me, and I don't want to make physical contact with the equipment.

Floppy drive cleaning (with a special disk that takes a couple drops of alcohol) used to be routine, but most people seldom use floppies anymore.

I use a slightly damp, soft cloth to wipe the screen of the monitor.

Easy enough, just click disk cleanup and the next screen will show you what you can delete.. If you want, you can check to see if you really want to delete those files.

What version of Windows are you running? You may need to download some utilities to help with cleanup depending on which version you use. You can also delete many things manually.

You open Windows Explorer and look on your main HD for your Windows directory. Open it to see your folders and go to Temporary Internet Files and Temp. Temporary Internet Files are generally cookies and can be deleted safely, although you might have to log in again the next time you visit some sites. In the Temp folder, you can generally delete anything with a TMP ending. There are some other files you can also safely delete, but I use a utility to do this, so I don't remember what they are offhand. If you are using IE, you may also be able to delete cookies, internet history and clear your cache from Tools, Options. In Netscape you can also do this in some versions.

Good luck,
Budfred

Hi kueijie,
I like Norton System Works. You can set it up for scheduled maintenance tasks that do a lot of the maintenance suggested previously. It is a simple program to run and fairly straight forword. Also reasonably priced. There are some other programs available too. In win98 there are some system tools you can use to disk defrag, scan disk, to help.
It unclutters a pc.
