I want to change my processor and am not exactly sure of the things I need to do. I know all about the jumper settings that need to be changed but I'm not sure about the CMOS memory or the BIOS settings. Will I have to change any of these? Will I have to alter any part of the set-up so that my computer recognises the new processor, or does it just go in and away you go?

Basically, it just goes in and away you go. Your BIOS may have a Soft Menu or Soft CPU based CPU setting in the BIOS to set the speed and bus of the processor. If this is the case, then that would be all you would need to do to set the processor up in the BIOS. If your board is all jumper driver, then just ensure the proper jumpers are set and that's it. Hope this helps.

You probably should verify your current BIOS version first, then go to the mobo mfr's website to be sure your version supports the new processor. You may need to download an upgrade and flash your BIOS first. If so, read all the warnings, save your old BIOS according to their instructions, and don't flash during a thunderstorm. ADDED: CPU's are quite sensitive to static electricity discharge, so do your work on a wood table on a tile floor if you can. Ground yourself by touching the power supply. Also, if you are upgrading to a much faster CPU, are you getting one with a heatsink/fan included? Your present setup may not be enough to provide adequate cooling.

If you haven't done it already (and I assume you have)...MAKE SURE YOUR MOTHERBOARD CAN HANDLE THE NEW PROCESSOR SPEED http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif If you have a "soft menu" your chances of an upgrade to the bios which INCLUDES faster settings is better than with a jumper type mobo.
