Can any one help with this problem? My pc crashed last night while I was online. I suspected that it was a memory problem. So i formattted the entire c: drive . And then I reinstalled windows95. I had the windows98 upgraded on before the crash. Now after booting from the A drive,
I receive a flash message: "Registry file was not find...inoperative for this session....X3... Cache problem") followed by the blue screen with the message "VFAT device initialization failed. A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. Vfat cannot continue loading.
System halted"
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Serine, a memory error should not require you to reformat your HD. You could try going in to the BIOS settings and disabling your external cache to see if it had failed.
If you have EDO RAM, you could also try removing the modules and reinserting them. It could just be a heat problem. While you have the case removed, turn on the PC and check that the CPU fan and power supply fan are both turning normally.
The VFAT error could indicate that something (like a bad sector on the HD) caused the installation to become corrupted. Since you formatted your HD anyway (hopefully you had backup of your critical data) you may as well boot to the Windows 98 startup disk and run fdisk and delete the primary partition and recreate it (answer yes to enable large disk support).

Welcome, serine! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif There can be more than one reason for this error message. Check this article (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q139/0/63.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=vfat&rnk=6&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W95) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Thank you all so kindly for all your help.
I was able to fix the problem by partioning again the c drive.
Afterwards, I used the command, format /s, to copy the command.com
file. That did the trick.
Once again thanks.
