While upgradeing the vedio card on a working sys, unknown that the upgrade card was bad, after no video I replaced the card with my old card. Then at bootup I get Hard Disk controller failure. I even tried a different HDD that I know is OK. Entered setup everything seems ok there. My HDD is worked off of a controller card. This is a old 486DX. This could be the end of a long relationship with this old friend. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

If the HD data cable has been in place for a long time, it may have gotten brittle enough to start causing problems if it was moved. Otherwise, try clearing the CMOS, either by removing the battery for 5 min or moving a jumper, depending on your mobo. If that doesn't do it, try unplugging HD power and data cables, removing controller, boot up, shut down, re-install controller and cables, boot up again. Good Luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

If it does turn out to be a controller card, they are still available and not too expensive. Check CompUSA, I know they carry them, local computer shops might have them too. I think they run about $20 for the ISA type.

Hey,
A couple of reasons this error message occurs is: 1) The data cable to the HDD is not securely seated. Sometimes whilst messing around inside the case, a person can inadvertently disturb the cable. 2) The jumper is not set correctly for the HDD or peripherals attached to the same cable. On newer HDD's, if the HDD is the only component on the cable, the jumper either has to be in a neutral (Not Master, Slave, etc) or completely removed.
A bad cable is another cause. I have had at least one of all three problems mentioned here cause the error message.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help,
I have made progress had to replace the controller and HDD before I could get back to C drive I have fdisk and formated another HDD but whenever I hook up my cd-rom drive sys failes to boot, you think it could be not jumpered right (reference to other post) I just dont understand what could have caused the controller and HDD to crash. All I did was replace the video card any ideals ?????????
thanks
