Hi,
I need some advice regarding modem speeds. I have a Supra Max 56K USB Modem, and I’m not sure what connection speed I should be getting. I checked out if I was able to connect to British Telecom Broadband, but was informed that I was situated to far from the Telephone exchange to get the benefit of Broadband. At present when I download anything, my “Get Right” software indicates that I have a speed of between 3.5kb and 4.5kb. Is this approximately what I should be getting, using a 56k USB modem, or should it be much higher. If I should be getting much faster downloads, can you give me any hints of how to speed it up or am I destined to have a slow rate because of my location?

Thanks for any advice. Royston

3.5kb and 4.5kb is about right for a 56k, can depend on time of day as well, i used a Diamond supra external to serial and i got around the same. good old BT, got me on line quality, try ring BT and asking then to turn the GAIN on your line down as low as poss.

have you tried ntl.com for cable broadband.

also try Win2000 or WinXP i found they gave me a better connection speed.

5.5 K and up is a good solid 56k connection, 3.5-4.5K indicates a speed in the mid 30's to low 40's (K). The mid 30's to low 40's ia catually the speed most 56k modems connect at.

A couple of things to try are having the shortest cable length between the modem and wall jack, having nothing else plugged into the same jack/cable run, not plugging anything into the modem.

Hi Royston

Where's Iver Heath. Is it Bucks?

I have NTL 512K cable here on Teesside and at £25 per month for 24x7, it's definitely the way to go.

Would be worthwhile to see if your area is cabled by NTL, Telewest. or any of the big cable boys - other than BT of course. Freeserve and some other ISP's also now offer Broadband, but it will be linked to BT lines, I guess.:D :D
