I have the creative 5.1 Live sound card but haven't purchased
new speakers yet. I find that the volume on my Polk audio
cheapo speakers from my old computer is really low with the
sound card. My old computer had on board audio and had
fairly loud volume. Do I have a problem with my sound card
or this something to expect until I get new speakers?

The SB requires you to use powered speakers....if the Polk are not poered speakers then yep, that is the way it will be.

can get the powered speakers.

If you have a MicroCenter in your area they usually seem to have powered speakers on sale for about $10. Not the top quality stuff, but functional.
