did you install ALL software related to the operation of this CAM before- plugging in the Cam. itself ??
do you have any problems with any other hardware using USB ??
additionally, you aren't supposed to Plug or Unplug USB devices while windows is running.. don't know if you did this or not, but thought you should know. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

The USB "HOST CONTROLLER" uses an IRQ(often IRQ 5)...... it is probably conflicting with another device installed on your system (my guess the sound card)....when you initialize the USB port - BANG it locks.
To fix this you will need to "uninstall" the USB Root Hub and reinstall it(praying Win98 will find a new IRQ for it) or you can go into BIOS and see if your BIOS will allow USB to work without an IRQ (some do). In that case, disable the IRQ for USB - it will still work, just not use an IRQ. If both fail(or it's something else http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif) post back the results and help will come.
You are using Win98 aren't you??

what is your motherboard? I know that the Asus A7v 133 boards have a USB problem.

I think Sea had it right about having the software correctly installed before using the equipment. But I have to disagree with him on the plugging in while Windows is running...Most usb devices actually call for a hot plug to initialize the driver installation of the device. I was just using a digital camera HP 215 on a Dell PIII 800 today and I connected the camera via usb while pc was running and it popped open the camera software to download my pics. Anyways, here is a great USB site www.usbman.com (http://www.usbman.com)
You will find patches of all sorts there...just make sure they are applicable to your system. I had a usb problem with Win 98 first edition using a SIS based chipset [on the kids PC Chips (Amptron) mobo]...there was a patch available, but once I installed Win 98 SE my usb problems went away.
Edit: the SIS chipset I was referring to was for the USB root hub.

I stand corrected on the plug/unplug issue http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
asides from that, I was getting to the line of thought that Randy did in the next post...
