I just installed a new motherboard in a new case. When win2000 pro starts it finds this pci communications device but cannot find the driver for it. I have installed the software that came with the motherboard. My modem won't work either but I am assuming this is because of the pci comm dev drivers not being installed. Is there a generic driver for this device?
This is supposed to be a jumperless motherboard.

You will need to find the specific Win2k drivers for your modem, since it seems that Win2k doesn't already have them.
Basically you will need to know who made you modem and then go to their site and download the win2k driver package. There should be specific install instructions with the drivers (either on the site or included in the download).
Before installing the driver package you will need to remove the PCI comm device (you may be able to use the update driver button in its properties...sometimes it works...)

I had my OS's mixed up. The OS is Win98. I just bought and installed a new modem which came with drivers. The modem seemed to install ok but will not work when I try to dial out. (No Response from Modem).
I still can't get the PCI Communications Device to install. It needs a driver, but can't find one. Not in Win98 Install CD, Motherboard CD, or any other source I have. Where can I find a driver for the PCI Comm. Device - Not the modem?

Hi zaarenoc
If you look in device manager, Is there an entry for modem enumerator?
Some winmodems seem to appear as two different devices, i.e. the modem, under its model name, and a modem enumerator. From your posts it sound as if the enumerator is installed, but not the modem.
Open the drviver disc in Explorer, and see if there are two .INF files in the win98 folder. If there are, the chances are that only one of them has been used by the install program.
Try the update drivers option on the modem from device manager, and point the install wizard at the inf file.

Some Modems need the software drivers installed before the hardware because most win modems use com 3 or 4 they are virtual ports and need to be installed by the software provided with your modem before you install your hardware. Look in the installation instructions to find out if this is the case with your MODEM.
If it is the case go to device manager remove the "PCI communication device". Shutdown your system and remove the MODEM from the PCI slot. Boot back up and install the drivers from the CD. Shutdown again install the MODEM in the PCI slot. Boot back up and Windows should finish installing the drivers.
You will probably need to have your Win 98 CD handy to install the TCP/IP protocol and dialup adapter.

I did this and the modem installed on COM4, which I don't have, so it must be a virtual one. When the window opens to dial my isp the computer freezes. I'm not sure how to resolve a conflict with a virtual port if that is the problem. The modem actually shows communications with COM4 when I use the diagnostics tab. COM1 and COM2 there isn't any communications.
I have the Microscope Diagnostics Kit and when I run it everything checks ok except it says, "No Modem."

It may help to disable Com 2 in BIOS. (Serial port 2) Sounds like an IRQ conflict to me. Disabling Com 2 will free up an IRQ.

David, I looked and there wasn't any modem enumerator installed. There is 3 .INF files and only the first one is used, however I installed each individually and no luck.

Well the beast is up and running, modem and all. It did install on virtual Com4. Internet Explorer is ver 4.0, so I tried upgrading to 6.0 and it crashed the system (Explorer.exe). I had to low-level format and start all over. I've worked on this one for a week so I'm not changing anything :)
I really appreciate the help you have all given me.
Thank you,
Doug
