I am working on a Acer Aspire computer system. The fan on the power suppply gave out so I replaced it with a new power supply from Acer. I plugged in all the connecters, and when I turned on the switch, there was a hissing sound and nothing happened. I shut it off and disconnected then reconnected the power connecters. When I turned it on again the power supply and hard drive start up but nothing else happens. I can't see anything on the screen and I can't here any beeps. I don't know what to do. I am sure I plugged everything in right the first time. How do I know if the motherboard or a slot card is burnt out.

Thanks

Welcome, chiphead23, fellow cheesehead! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Let's keep our fingers crossed. Does the power supply have a switch on the back for selecting the voltage, i.e. 115/230, and is it set correctly? Is this an AT or an ATX power supply? If AT, it's possible to plug in the motherboard connectors incorrectly. If the black wires on each connector are next to each other toward the center, you did it right. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif If not, you may have cooked something. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Trust me......if you had the RED wires in the center when you tried to post up.......you short circuited the motherboard and it's a goner. I know from my early days......BLACK wires in the center or poof..its gone.

I believe I do have the black wires together, because I knew I needed to do that. However can I plug the connectors in back words. Also the power supply does not have a switch on it. It plugs into the motherboard, but the switch on the front of the case has been acting up. It had been very hard to shut off before I replaced the poweer supply. Now I can't turn it on or off by the switch, I can only turn it off and on by unplugging the power cord from the power supply.

Thanks

And has anything changed, do you need more things to try?

Yes I need more things to try. I do not know if the switch is bad or not. Thanks

Before you replaced the power supply was the a problem with swtich? Did it work some of the time?

Trace the wires for the switch and make sure that they are properly connected, also make sure that the leads from the power supply all well seated.

I checked the connections again, but it doesn't seem to help at all. It still will not boot up. There was problems with the switch before I replaced the power supply. I had to really press on it to get it to shut off.
