I am trying to install a microsoft "intellimouse" to my pc. I use windows 98. After fitting the mouse and running the cd, it appears to be installed, however when switching off and switching on again, (as prompted) the "no mouse installed" message is all I keep getting. I have tried uninstalling the old mouse. The mouse is ok (it works fine on my laptop). I am having to use an adaptor to convert from ps2 to serial (there is only the one free serial port). The adaptor is ok (I tried another). I am not a techy.Any suggestions, help greatly appreciated.
Colin.

Welcome to the PC Guide Forums, Colin!!
I had an Intellimouse, but it connected to either the PS/2 socket, or - with the supplied adapter - into a USB port.
If using a USB port, the correct installation procedure is to boot-up your system and then plug in the mouse.
After doing so, go to the control panel and select install new hardware, when you will prompted to insert your Intellimouse disk.
After that, it's just follow the menu and a USB mouse should then function correctly, although I found necessary to keep the prog in my start-up file, otherwise it would often revert to the default settings.
I don't know if this helps at all?
Come back if it doesn't and someone else will help you :) :)

Go into safe mode,
remove ALL mice related drivers.
Re-boot and see if Plug N pray recognizes the mouse.
What OS?
What kind of PC? CPu? RAM? etc
Is there no PS2 port?

Is this mouse an optical? If so it won't work properly or not at all in a serial port. This has been my experience.

Did the mouse you are using come with the serial adapter, or had you previously used the adapter with a different mouse?
Serial mice that work best are usually plain old ball driven, two or three button critters. I have even had spotty wheel support on serial mice, especialliy when running through an adapter.

This thread is about 6 months old and from a poster who never posted back in response to earlier suggestions and questions. I really doubt you are going to get a response now....:p :D

I hate to spring this on you guys but it appears that the original poster felt quite trapped having to deal with the whole rodent issue. A sad tail but true, and as Budfred pointed out, the clocks been run up on this one for some time.... Hickory Dickory! :p

Budfred, perseverence... :p
Dang, I know I should check the expiration date on those canned rodents more closely.....
