Anybody else get stung with the Chernobyl virus today (26th April)? One of our clients had 2 PC's go down. One was regularly backed up but the other wasn't and looks like it has lost a lot of valuable data.

Does anybody know if it is possible to recover data after a virus attack? I know that there are specialist firms who will do it for a hefty fee, but is there anything I can try and do myself?

Check this Gibson Research link (http://grc.com/cih.htm). I think Norton had a fix too, but I don't have time now to search for it now; have to get ready for work.

There is a free program called "Recon" out there somewhere that claims to be able to recover "wiped" hard drives.

Here are the links to the CIH Removal Tool (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/kill_cih.html) from Symantec and Recon (http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/).

I tried the utility available from the Gibson Research site and it completely fixed my system. After running it I went into Windows and everything had been restored. It was almost as if nothing had happened!

Thank you so much, Reid. You have no idea how much restoring the data means to our client.

I'm glad to hear that it worked. As I re-read the description of how it works, it caused me to wonder if it may also be useful for correcting disk corruption from other causes. I think I'll keep a copy handy for a possible future disk "emergency". I already bought SpinRite from him.
