hello,
i am working on a toshiba 660cbt laptop for a friend. i blew the hard drive to do a clean install, and the cd-rom is not showing up in setup. he just bought this and i am not sure if it was there prior or not. the drive flashes, so it is getting power, but it starts to spin, and then stops. like, i said, when i went into the setup, it is not showing up. is this cd-rom bad? thanks in advance for all the help, ANY SUGGESTIONS?. god bless DALE

Did you try to install the driver for the CDrom? If you don't have it, you can probably find it on Toshiba's web site. I would also check in Setup at bootup to see if it is listed in the bios.

thanks for the fast reply. i know this may sound a little stupid, but this is the first laptop that i have dealt with. i tried holding delete, f10, f1, and have not figured out how to get in the bios. THANKS

Doesn't sound stupid to me, just not experienced yet. I didn't know what the bios was at one time either, if I remember I learned about it from a support tech.
Anyway, you can sometimes access it with ESC or F8 too, usually there is some indication on the initial screen when you turn on the system. If you start of with a Logo for the manufacturer, I think you can press CTRL to get the actual opening screen. You can probably find out how to access it on the Toshiba web site if these things don't work. However, you may want to try to install the CD drivers before messing with the bios. If you have the drivers, you can go to Control Panel then Add New Hardware to install it. If that doesn't work, then I would check out the bios. If you don't have the driver, get it from the Toshiba web site first.
Good luck,

ok, thanks budfred. the only problem is, i can not go to control panel because i have already blowed the drive. when i fdisk it, it starts to install the driver, but it tells me that there is no device found. that is what the problem is. i got into the bios by accident yesterday, and the hard drive was there, but i found no cd-rom. i will give this f8 a try and see what happens. thanks alot for all the help. Do you have a setup disk that has CDRom drivers on it. Many startup disks today come with the option to boot with CDRom support. If you have one or can borrow one, it may allow you to reinstall windows and set up your CDRom in windows. It is unlikely that the bios is going to be helpful if you have already looked and didn't find the CDRom. If you still want to get into the bios, pressing ESC is probably more likely than the F8 key.
The setup disk would be a floppy that you created to be able to boot into windows in this type of situation. If you don't have one, there is a good possibility that someone you know does or that you can use the computer you are using to surf the net to make one. Just be sure to include CDRom support if you make one.
When you post back, provide a little more info about your system and that may help in giving you ideas. Particularly what your OS is.

Is the CD a removable drive? Is your Toshiba still under warranty (sounds unlikely if it was running Win95). What CPU do you have and how much RAM? I am not sure what to suggest next, but if you provide more info, maybe I will think of something or some of the more advanced geeks here will respond.

the drive is like part of the bottom of the laptop. it looks like a battery cover, it slides on and plugs itself in the slot. no sirm no warranty. it has a 150 cpu, 32 meg ram, 10x cd-rom. hope this helps. thanks

Is that laptop perhaps a Toshiba 660CDT, rather than a 660cbt?
Looks like the BIOS doesn't allow for booting from the CD-ROM. Which means you need to make a bootable DOS floppy disk with the correct CD-ROM drivers on it.
Go to this page (http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=106086&moid=1073769643&BV_SessionID=@@@@0564300391.1032011967@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccjadcgelmhfgmcgfkceghdgngdgll.0&ct=DL) to get the DOS CD-ROM drivers for that machine -- if in fact it is a 66CDT :)
