People this problem is very complex, i hope to give as much info to you to fix this problem. Here's the dealy yo's, whenever i try to run [ANY] of my games and a number of certain programs, they always freeze and after a minute or two end up going to the blue screen of death unless i ctrl+alt+del them, while other programs like my mp3 player runs fine. I've checked every possible problem, looked for hardware conflicts, missing dll's, cmos settings, and even for a virus, and to no avail. I cannot even go to my direct x 8 settings either because it freezes as well. I have no clue as to what is causing these problems, i'm running windows 98 se pII 400, and never has this problem occured before, so i know something is fishy here. i'm not that dumb when it comes to computers, but i ain't no computer geek either, so any help at all would be appreciated............

Well if the DX diagnostics crashses then it problably a safe bet to say you've got a problem with DX8. You can try theDirectX Troubleshooter (http://http://), but most MS suggestions as what to do end up with a reinstall of DX.....

Hi S_K_I, welcome
Is this a cumulative problem (more things affected each day) or did it happen all at once? You said you checked for a virus, how current is this virus scanner? check here (http://antivirus.cai.com) if you are using an older version.

Good luck

If you had no problems with DX7 or lower and now you're having major lockups it is either DX8 or your video card drivers, try installing the latest drivers for your video card.

See if you can get some known good memory and try it. Memory is the cause of more lockups than most people realize.

Also check to make sure the contacts are the same, don't use gold with tin. If you're currently using gold with tin, there's the problem. It creates oxide corrosion on the contacts, and causes lots of problems.

i would definitely know if it was my ram, cuz alot more programs wouldn't be working if it had to do with that problem. the good part is now, i figured out what programs and games that my problem is affecting, the bad news is i haven't figured the problem still. so far, i know that any multimedia files such as media player, and games freeze up or don't load up at all. but my i can run my mp3 player fine so it can't be my sound card. i'm pretty sure there may be some files missing or corrupted registry dll's maybe, but not conflicts because i fully checked those out. i reinstalled the latest video drivers too, didn't help, put dx 7 back on, didn't help, so something else is causing this hell for me. i'm thinkin of using norton utilities to dissect the real issue here. if you guys have any other software that would be useful, hook a brother up please.....
