Just repartitioned (fdisk) and reformatted my HD, copied MSCDEX.EXE to C: and installed CDrom Drivers. Cannot get Drive prompt for CD-rom so that I may reload Windows. Windows 98 SE boot disk has some files missing (not sure all of which that are missing).

Second problem - several times from the dos prompt I've used CTRL ALT DEL to restart computer - often screen goes black and puter seems to freeze up. HD working light is on - though nothing happens. Reset button will do nothing at this point. Once I power down computer and restart it boots fine back to dos prompt.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions not involving explosives.

The easiest way to get a good bootdisk is to go here: http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download one. You may want to check to see if the reset button is enabled in BIOS, and as far as the keyboard ??

Welcome, PappyK! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif How about just firecrackers? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif One thing -- you don't really need either MSCDEX or the CD-ROM driver(s) to be present on C:, but they both do have to be on the boot diskette, so DOS can access your CD-ROM drive to be able to start the Windows install. After the setup is complete, Windows will use its own included "native" drivers more efficiently.

Have you made any changes in your BIOS setup program? If you don't know for sure, or aren't familiar with how it works, reply back for some more help. There is a good troubleshooting section here (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/index.htm) in The PC Guide. Also this (http://www.pcguide.com/proc/sw/w95inst.htm) section on installing Windows. Although this last one is written for Win95, most of it will apply to 98 also. Good Luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thank you both for your reply. I did get a new boot disk fro the link you provided and that did the trick. I've built several computers and thought that was my problem. I hadn't altered anything in Bios - only added a NIC card. It's loading fine now - I appreciate your help.
