Ok I was putting a my Athlon gig in my friends cpu. To see if it was any faster than his 800 MHZ. Also I put in more RAM in his cpu but it was a PC100 and the RAM in the cpu was PC133. So it booted up but it did not show the Ram I put in which was PC100. So then I put his 800 MHZ back in the cpu would not boot. Does any one no why???? So I was getting very frustrated and thats when mistakes happen. So I put my gig back in but I did not put the fan back on.Seconds later my friend yells cut the cpu off cause it was smoking. So do you all think I fried the processer?? Cause now it wont boot with any of the processers in it. Could I had fried the motherboard also??? Man this sucks baddd http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif

I think you had a very bad day. I would say that the processor is toasted but I dont think the motherboard is. The role of the fan is to keep your processor cool, and doest have to do with your mobo.

It only takes 7 seconds without a fan on (according to AMD) to cook the processor.
IF left in too long.......say goodbye to the mobo too(the intense heat ruins the 462 socket).

Do you think my RAM video card, sound card, or any other of my components are messed up? Also could I test a processer that is new in the motherboard that is messed up or will that screw it up to? or vice versa? This is a real set back. Do you think AMD will take the processer back? Thanks Randy for the help this makes me want to get out of the cpu business for good

I really doubt if anything else is harmed(devices on the mobo including Ram).....your motherboard might be OK...dont throw the towel in on it till you try a known good cpu in it [with a FAN on it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif]. AMD will know in a HEARTBEAT that the cpu has overheated........your chances are better with the distributor; however, I would plan on buying a new cpu. They put disclaimers ALL OVER THE PLACE warning about "posting up" without a FAN voids warranty.

I suggest clear CMOS on the MB before you try anything just to be safe. If things work you can easily redo your BIOS settings.

If I put a new processer in the motherboard that is blown will it blow the processer? Also if I put a blown processer in a motherboard will that blow the motherboard? Because I have put a new processer in the blown motherboard and then I put that processer in a new motherboard and it wont boot. this is ridioulous. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
